Chapter 13 - Chapter 12: Night Tour

After leaving Professor Flitwick's office, Alvin walked towards the library, contemplating the content of their conversation. It had helped him a lot and showed him the path forward.

Magic is never just about chanting a spell and waving a wand.

Magic is mysterious, and many wizards know how to use it but not why. They can perform spells but do not understand their essence.

Of course, the purpose of Hogwarts has never been to train only elite wizards but to serve the entire British wizarding world. Generally speaking, professors do not delve into such esoteric topics unless a student inquires.

When asked, professors reveal more profound insights. Otherwise, students just need to know how to use spells effectively.

Alvin decided to study the essence of magic and explore more esoteric secrets, starting with ancient magic.

In the library, Alvin encountered the librarian, Mrs. Pince, a very serious witch.

Books were her life. Her eagle-like eyes scanned the library frequently.

If anyone dared to handle books roughly or make noise, they would immediately receive her cold gaze.

Alvin found a copy of "Introduction to Ancient Runes" by Silves Victor in the general section. It's a textbook for third-year students and continues to be used in the fifth year.

For Alvin, it was sufficient.

He found a place to read quietly and only reluctantly left the book on the shelf at dinner time.

"It looks like I need to buy a copy; otherwise, coming to the library every time will affect my efficiency."

"But I can't use Fury; it's too conspicuous. I'll need to use the owl post office. But I can't delay now. It seems there will be a night tour tonight."

Alvin muttered as he walked, planning to return to the library later at night.

As for the school rules?

Sorry, as the heir of a certain fraternity, Alvin's motto is that as long as no one sees him breaking the rules, a night tour is perfectly fine.

In the Great Hall, Alvin found that Emma was already there and had saved a spot for him.

Alvin sat down, and soon, his plate was piled high with food, three or four times more than Emma's. It was stacked as high as a hill.

Emma burst into laughter.

"Alvin, why are you so hungry?"

"You know, reading is exhausting. I just came from the library."

Alvin replied with his mouth full, answering Emma's question.

"As expected of Ravenclaw's little genius, you earned Ravenclaw's first bonus points of the school year."

Emma teased but still carefully handed Alvin a glass of juice to prevent him from choking.

Alvin rolled his eyes, not minding her teasing, and concentrated on his dinner.

After leaving the Great Hall, Emma had no evening classes, so she returned to the common room with a few friends to play wizard chess.

Diligent Alvin, however, had to head to the Astronomy Tower for his astronomy class.

Astronomy in the wizarding world is much like astronomy in the Muggle world.

They use telescopes to observe the sky and learn about the trajectories of different stars, which isn't magical at all.

At nine in the evening, Alvin returned to his dorm, dizzy from stargazing, and collapsed onto his bed.

"No, I can't be so decadent. I still need to go to the library."

Alvin sat up suddenly, shook his head, and forced himself to rally. Learning to cast spells without a wand would earn him an extra card sooner.

Most wizards are like lambs to the slaughter without their wands. Whether they're sliced, rinsed, or grilled depends on their opponent's preference.

Alvin didn't want to leave such a glaring weakness for enemies to exploit, so mastering wandless spellcasting was a priority.

In the middle of the night, Alvin decided to leave now, estimating the common room would be empty.

After tidying up, Alvin cast a Disillusionment Charm on himself, left the dormitory, and entered the common room.

Alvin breathed a sigh of relief upon finding it empty. After all, many Ravenclaws loved reading late into the night.

Leaving the common room, Alvin walked gently towards the library, hoping to avoid Filch and his cat.

One man and one cat roamed the castle like ghosts at night, searching for rule-breaking students.

Reaching the library, Alvin retrieved the book he had read that afternoon. After some hesitation, he decided to explore the Restricted Section.

After all, the Restricted Section was further inside, allowing him to hide if someone came to inspect.

In the corner of the Restricted Section, Alvin took out his wand, cast a Lumos spell, and set the wand aside to read with relish.

This book was perfect for him. Ancient Runes are magical words, and each word's analysis could fill a book.

This book was a brief introduction to the application and analysis of several basic runes.

And Alvin needed such books on the nature of magic to deepen his understanding.

Meanwhile...

"Come on, George, hurry up, or I'll tease you for a semester if Filch catches you because of me."

"Quiet, Fred, I was setting a big dungbomb trap just now. Let's head towards the library."

A pair of red-haired twins ran down the hallway, evading Filch's pursuit.

But their faces showed no worry—only mischievous grins from a successful prank. They ran and joked, gradually approaching the library.

...

At that moment, Alvin's ears perked up, and he snapped out of his immersive reading.

"Someone's here?" Alvin tilted his head thoughtfully, his hands still moving.

After extinguishing the light on his wand, he cast a Disillusionment Charm on himself, returned the book to its place, and walked out of the library.

He then saw the Weasley twins running and playing, heading toward him like two playful dogs. Behind them was the roar of a Hogwarts administrator,

"I know you! I know you're right ahead! Don't let me catch you! I'll put you in detention! A semester of detention!"

Alvin: ...

At this point, Alvin's head hurt a little. He hadn't expected someone to bring trouble to the library, or rather, bring Filch.

Despite his calculations, he hadn't anticipated that his perfect night tour plan would be disrupted by these two troublemakers.

However, he didn't intend to help. The twins were in their third year and had enough experience with Filch; they didn't need anyone's help.

Since he couldn't read any more, he might as well enjoy the show.
