Chapter 12 - Chapter Eleven: The Essence of Spells, Ancient Runes

With the ringing of the school bell, the first Charms lesson came to an end. Professor Flitwick awarded Ravenclaw 10 points for Alvin's excellent performance.

As the little wizards exited the classroom, Alvin remained behind. He had some questions he needed to ask Professor Flitwick.

Seeing that everyone had left and Alvin remained, Professor Flitwick asked with a hint of curiosity, "Mr. Gaunt, do you have anything else to discuss?"

"Yes, Professor. I have some questions about spells that I'd like to discuss with you."

"Then let's talk in my office. Come with me, Mr. Gaunt."

Alvin followed Professor Flitwick to his office. The office was spacious, with bookshelves lining the walls, filled with books on spells—some not even published.

Professor Flitwick took his seat and gestured for Alvin to sit down as well.

Alvin obliged and sat across from Professor Flitwick.

"Would you like something to drink, Mr. Gaunt?"

"A cup of black tea, no sugar, please."

Alvin loved tea, but he never understood the British habit of adding sugar to black tea. Did Brits add sugar to everything?

"Black tea is indeed a good choice, Mr. Gaunt."

With a wave of his wand, Professor Flitwick conjured an exquisite tea set on the table. The tea set floated up and began pouring the tea.

"Wonderful application of the Levitation Charm, Professor."

"Thank you. Now, Mr. Gaunt, what questions do you have?"

Professor Flitwick took a sip of tea and then asked Alvin.

"Professor, I believe I have some talent in magic spells. Before coming to school, I had already learned most of the spells in the Standard Book of Spells, elementary level."

"But when I tried silent casting and wandless casting, I encountered some difficulties."

Indeed, through the system's daily card draw and his hard work, Alvin had learned many spells. But he struggled with silent and wandless casting.

Silent casting was occasionally successful, but wandless casting had never worked.

"Oh? Mr. Gaunt, from your performance in class, I could tell you're a genius. If you don't mind, could you demonstrate your current abilities?"

Professor Flitwick expressed interest.

Alvin didn't speak, instead demonstrating the same skills as in class. He levitated the teapot and filled Professor Flitwick's cup, then cast a Vanishing Spell to make the teapot disappear.

Finally, he used a counter-curse to restore everything.

Clap! Clap! Clap!

Applause echoed as Professor Flitwick beamed with happiness.

"Very impressive, Mr. Gaunt. If this were class, I would award you twenty points—no, fifty points! We haven't had a genius like you in Ravenclaw for a long time!"

Professor Flitwick pushed up his glasses and wiped his eyes with a handkerchief, causing Alvin's eyebrow to twitch.

After a while, Professor Flitwick calmed down and began considering Alvin's problem.

A few minutes passed before he looked up at Alvin.

"Mr. Gaunt, why do you think a wizard needs a spell and a wand to cast spells?"

Alvin was taken aback by the question and began pondering it. After some thought, he gave his answer.

"Professor, I think that a wizard can concentrate when reciting a spell, and through the wand and fixed gestures, the magic within can be activated for spells."

Alvin shared his opinion, looking expectantly at Professor Flitwick for evaluation.

"Well said, Mr. Gaunt. Your understanding of spells is close to the O.W.L.s exam level."

Professor Flitwick first expressed admiration, then continued.

"However, you've overlooked something—something ordinary wizards don't consider: will."

Professor Flitwick pointed to his head.

"Will?"

"Yes, when a wizard casts a spell, it's not just concentration. It's a process of instilling one's will into the spell. Why are we wizards? We believe we can do this, and we can make it happen through the spell."

After taking a sip of tea, he continued, "And when you want to cast spells silently, you need a stronger will to release the spell successfully. Without reciting the spell, you need to instill enough will in your way to release it. This way, you can naturally cast spells silently."

"Of course, the power of a spell used this way is not as strong as when using the incantation."

After listening, Alvin frowned, deep in thought.

Professor Flitwick was in no hurry, enjoying his afternoon tea leisurely.

Minutes later, Alvin took out his wand and pointed at a quill on the table, which floated up.

But as Alvin relaxed, the quill slowly fell again.

"Congratulations, Mr. Gaunt, it seems you've found a method that suits you. Your talent is truly remarkable."

Professor Flitwick was delighted. Having such a perceptive young wizard in his house was a joy.

Slytherin had won the House Cup for six consecutive years.

Although Ravenclaw focused more on knowledge improvement and cared less about trivial matters, Flitwick, as the head of the house, still hoped his house could win the House Cup.

In Alvin, he saw that possibility.

He was more than happy to provide guidance to a talented young wizard.

"Thank you, Professor. Your guidance helped me get started so quickly," Alvin expressed his gratitude.

"Professor, what about casting spells without a wand? Does it require an even stronger will?" Alvin continued to ask.

"Yes, Mr. Gaunt. But you also need a deeper understanding of magic. In third year, I suggest taking Ancient Runes; it will help you a lot. But that's still a bit early for you."

Flitwick patiently explained and hinted at the future.

"Ancient Runes? I see. Thank you for your help today."

Alvin understood Flitwick's suggestion, and having achieved his goal for the day, he stood up and left the office.
