Chapter 1 - There's just no way

Xavier

Ring Ring

I brought my phone to my ear to receive an earful from Mother. As much as I love her to death, I just don't need this right now.

"Are you even listening?"

"Of course, I am."

From the corner of my eye, I saw my personal assistant, Kate, entering my office. Saved by the bell, I tell you.

"Ma, I gotta go. Love you, bye." I quickly hang up.

"You know she only means well."

I scoffed as I made my way to my desk, leaving the outside view of the other skyscrapers that I was appreciating from the glass wall.

Kate stood before me on the other side of the desk.

"So, I just received confirmation from Queen Modelling Agency. They're ready to provide their models for the skincare line photoshoot."

"I knew I could count on you, Kate. Good job."

"Is that it?"

I looked at her, confused.

"You have to treat me to dinner to actually show your appreciation." She smirked.

"Okay."

"Okay, as in..." She expectantly looked at me.

I sighed, knowing that my plan to go home early today won't be happening.

"We'll have dinner after knocking off from work. Happy now?"

Kate's eyes sparkled, as they always do whenever she's super excited about something.

"Thank you, boss."

Kate left the files that needed my signatures on my desk and made her exit from my office.

I was signing the files when someone knocked at my office door.

"Come in."

"What's this I hear about you going on a date?!" Sean asked.

"It's not what you think, man." I closed the last file I was signing.

"Mmm hmm." He took his seat in front of my desk.

"What?"

"I dunno, man. The way I see it, Kate really likes you."

I scoffed. "That's not possible.

Sean raised his hands in the air and got up to leave. "If you say so."

There's just no way that Kate likes me.

We made it on time, at Selentio gourmet, for our dinner reservation.

"So, boss..."

A chuckle left my lips. "Come on, Kate, Xavier is just fine."

She smiled at that and took a sip of her wine. "Alright. Then, am I allowed to ask who your ideal type of woman is?"

"Straight to the point, huh?"

Kate shrugged.

"Mmm, unfortunately, I don't do love."

"Really?" Her shoulders slumped in disappointment.

"Anyways." I cleared my throat. "Who's your ideal type of man?"

"Someone pretty smart, confident, and just breathtaking to look at." She replied, looking intently at me.

"Okay..." I'm not gonna read too much into it. Who knows, it might just be all this wine making me see things.

As dinner went on, I got to know Kate better. She's one heck of an interesting lady.

Kate calmed down from all the laughing she's been doing after hearing about my embarrassing childhood days.

"You were such a naughty kid." She said, clutching her stomach.

"I really was." I smiled, reminiscing of the good old days. "Anyways, I'm glad we did this, Kate."

"I should actually be thanking you for agreeing to this."

I nodded. "Uh, Kate. Will you be my plus one at the launch party tomorrow night?"

"Of course, I will."

I sighed in relief.

We got our things, with dinner coming to an end rather too quickly than I expected. The both of us waited outside the restaurant as George, my driver, brought the car around.

"Now that I'm thinking about it, why did you ask me to be your plus one?"

"Huh?"

"If not me, who else would accompany you?"

She snickered.

"Very funny, Kate."

"I've been your plus one to all these events for the past 2 years, Xavier."

"It still doesn't hurt to ask, you know?" I raised my eyebrow at her.

"If you say so." She nodded.

George brought the car in front of us. When I got in, I was surprised to see Kate just standing there.

"You coming?"

"Oh, no. I have plans with my girls, and we're meeting up just down the road."

"Okay. Get home safe, Kate."

I entered the car, and George drove away when I saw Kate, waving bye in the far distance.
