Chapter 5 - Saviours?

The man was almost a whole head shorter than my father, his back was quite hunched, he was thin and looked as weak as me, he wore a doctor's vest with a big pair of thick glasses that obscured his eyes, he was almost completely bald if not for a few surviving straws of hair that survived on the sides of his head, he looked to be around seventy years old, I was surprised someone survived so long in that medieval society, even the elders were called such despite being only middle-aged men.

He slowly walked towards me looking at me with interest, he started muttering some things while he analysed my condition, he seemed strangely competent, not like those scammers before him, where the hell did they find such guy ?

After a whole hours of looking at me from every angle he announced with an unexpected high voice "It seems there is still hope for this child", those word made my mother erupt in tears of happiness, even my father seemed shocked.

The first to talk was also my father asking the great question "what must we do, Doctor?", the old man answered "your child has a dissonance with his mana reserves, they seem to be too big for her small body, if she were a noble there wouldn't be any problem, she would just had to eat all the elixir and potions her family would have given her, but as you know you aren't exactly in the economic situation to do that".

Hearing that, each member of the family got confused for different reasons, my parents got confused as to how I could have noble-sized mana reserves, I was confused about what they meant for 'mana', I knew the meaning of the word I played at some fantasy games on my work computer sometimes, but this term meant only one thing, had I ended up in a fantasy world ?!

My siblings were still occupied arguing, not listening to what we were taliing about, the doctor continued to talk "But! There is still a way if you give me this young poor child, I could bring him to my clinic where I could adjust his status with the equipment I have there".

My parents looked at each other, they were in deep thought, I didn't knew why but I felt as if something in that doctor was off, no one would have been so kind towards the other without knowing them, he had probably another purpose for doing that, the fact that his assistant didn't mutter a single word since she entered inside the house didn't help.

Even all those red flags weren't enough to alarm my desperate parents, they gave their permit to the doctor, a big smile appeared in his face, unsettling me "I'll be back in three days in order to take the child, be careful with her until then, her health is very fragile, we shouldn't risk everything now, don't you think?" he then looked directly at me saying "little child, I will save you, I promise, You will just have to await for a little more time".

Before listening to any of my possible response he got out, his assistant followed him immediately, they gave me an unsettling sensation, something about them wasn't right, the way the assistant looked at me made me feel discomfort, I could be sure an hint of malice could be seen in her eyes.

...

The doctor looked back at the broken house, a smile arose, he found it, the perfect specimen, he told his assistant right away "Let's get back to the base and get everything ready, I think I found the key for our project".

His assistant nodded, a glint of malice could still be seen in her cold blue eyes, she was already savouring the cries of the children that awaited them at the laboratory, soon another test subject would become part of the group.
