Chapter 40
Annoyance rather than sympathy etched Damien’s countenance as he observed Isabella’s tearful display. He found nothing more distasteful than a wretch clinging to him in tears. If she had wished to avoid this predicament, she should have acted with more thought. He prepared to dismiss her and remove himself from the scene when a delicate voice echoed through the door.
“Let’s return,” it said.
At the sound, Damien turned his head, his brow creasing into a sharp scowl. It was his wife’s voice—a voice that should have been resting quietly in her chambers.

“Oh, Damien… Damien, I love you…”
Marguerite froze in place mid-knock, the lamp she held quivering in her hand. Chloe’s expression hardened. She found nothing amiss with finding Damien in Isabella’s chambers, but her heart refused to accept the reality.
“Let’s return,” Chloe proposed. Just as she sighed softly, the door before her abruptly swung open. Standing there was Damien.
