My hand fumbled for the light switch, heart hammering against my ribs as I flipped it on. The sudden brightness illuminated Rhys Knight lounging in my living room as if he owned it, one ankle crossed over his knee, his dark eyes fixed on me with predatory focus.
"What are you doing in my apartment?" I demanded, my voice wavering despite my attempt to sound strong. "How did you get in here?"
Rhys rose to his feet in one fluid motion, his height and broad shoulders making my spacious living room feel suddenly claustrophobic. He wore a simple black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the muscular forearms I remembered too well.
"Is that any way to greet your mate?" His voice was smoother than I remembered, a dangerous velvet that sent unwanted shivers down my spine.
"You're not my mate," I said automatically, though my wolf whined in protest. "And you're trespassing."
He moved toward me with unhurried confidence. "I wanted to surprise you for your birthday."
