"Regardless of whether you were sent by the goddess, you arrived when we needed you most. For that, you are welcome in our city. We can offer you shelter, food… answers, perhaps."
The commander went on,
"Answers?"
Nina asked, her eyes narrowing slightly.
The commander nodded.
"Yes. If the gods are moving, if the boundaries between worlds are faltering, then perhaps the priests or historians can offer clarity. If not… at least you will be safe."
Hwan hesitated.
"We'll think about it."
The commander accepted that with a short nod, then signaled to his men to lower their weapons.
"I am Commander Duren. Should you choose to come, our city lies just beyond the ridge. Look for the river—it winds straight to our gates."
With that, he turned and began to lead his men away, a few lingering glances cast over their shoulders.
As the guards disappeared into the trees, Hwan finally exhaled.
"Well, that was weird."
He muttered.
"Very."
Nina agreed.
