Chapter 3 - Inside the city

Elena slowly walked, with Idris in her arms, towards the town. Its name was Attikos which resembled Attica, a city in times of the ancient Greek.

The two of them were living in the northernmost outskirts of Attikos in a little 40m² house made out of stone.

On their way, they passed many farms. There were sheep, pigs, chicken and even some cows. They saw the city wall getting bigger and bigger in the distance, as they advanced further.

Even though all these houses were located outside the rampart, they still counted as a part of the town.

Few of the people living on farms didn't want to belong to the city, causing a dispute between them and the nobles inside every couple of months. It weren't big events, but the other farmers were caught in it too, resulting in the innocent hating the independence-seekers.

The wall was an iron-made masterpiece of the best craftsmen in the country of Azora and much more stable than just a stone wall. Iron was actually very scarce in their world, making it even more valuable.

Idris looked at the gate in front of them. 2 guards were standing on the sides of it, inspecting every person going through it.

When they arrived, one of the guards stepped forward while saying:"What are your names and what is the purpose of your visit?"

Idris asked himself if it really was necessary to tell their names, but it couldn't be helped.

His mother answered truthfully with a calm voice:" I am Elena Roydon, and this is my son Idris Roydon. We came here to shop for some clothes."

While saying so, she pointed towards Idris, implying that the clothes would be for him.

The guard analyzed every reaction of her carefully, trying to find out if it was really true.

His gaze went down and scanned if there was some weapon on them, before letting them through.

The two of them made their way in. As soon as they stepped into the city, they only saw people walking around in the small streets. Everyone here was busy.

His mother said, still not knowing he could understand her words:"The city is separated into upper and lower districts. The upper districts are located in the middle of the town, surrounding the royal palace. Only rich nobles are residing there. The upper district is again divided into southern, eastern, northern and western districts", she pointed at the middle of the city. She moved her finger down to the houses in front of them:"This is the lower district. It too is divided into southern, eastern, northern and western districts. Although the western district is officially a part of the city, it was once attacked and never rebuild. So there's no one living there. To enter the upper district you need to pass another gate. But I don't think you have the need to do so", her words turned into mumbling at the end of her sentence.

She stopped speaking and started to move. On the sides of the street were shops, selling all kinds of stuff. They halted at a store, where clothes were hanging outside to show their fine products to the people. They entered and moved to the children's section.

The store had a variety of sizes what was uncommon. There were shirts, pants, shoes and robes. Idris was looking for a shirt and pants.

After finding what he'd searched for, a black shirt and blue pants, Elena paid the price and went to look for something for herself too.

In the noon both of them were happy with what they bought. On Elena's side it was a red dress with black ornaments on it. They wanted something to eat and decided to go to an inn.

The inn was a tall building, taller than the ones around it.

They went inside and seated themselves at a table in the corner. They ordered fish and some meat for Idris and salad for Elena.

While eating, Idris heard from the table besides his that something big should happen a couple of years from now. He didn't understand them clearly, but wasn't bothered at all. If they planned anything they would surely be stopped by the king or his subordinates.

He didn't think that their plan would actually succeed in the future. But it was only his wishful thinking that prevented him from doing anything.
