Chapter 3 - The whispered war

Ruby had barely made it five steps into the sanctuary before the whispers started.

"She looks... familiar."

"Is that who I think it is?"

"Lord have mercy, and with kids too."

"Pastor John knows her?"

She kept her eyes low, clutching Zoe's hand and gently guiding Jayden along the polished floors. Her stomach churned — not from nerves, but from hunger. They hadn't eaten a full meal in two days.

She slid quietly into a seat near the back, heart pounding like a drum.

Pastor John was still frozen near the altar, his eyes locked on her like a man trying to decipher a vision. He blinked, adjusted his suit jacket, and finally turned toward the podium.

"Uh... saints, let us prepare our hearts for the Word," he said, his voice slightly strained.

Ruby exhaled — not in relief, but with dread. Because just then, the woman with the perfectly styled hair, the microphone in her hand, and the eyes of a hawk was heading her way.

Esther.

--- The Confrontation

Esther's heels clicked like judgment with every step.

She smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Hello there, sweetheart. Are you... visiting someone?"

Ruby stood, chin high. "No. We're just... here to listen."

Esther's eyes dropped to the children, then back up to Ruby's face.

"You know, we have a dress code here. And a screening process for... visitors. Especially those around children." She folded her arms. "We like to keep the house of God decent and orderly."

Ruby raised an eyebrow. "Well, good thing I left my glitter and stilettos at home."

Esther blinked, taken aback.

Before she could respond, another voice cut in:

"That's enough, Esther."

Pastor John had stepped down from the pulpit, walking toward them slowly.

His voice was firm, calm, and clear — like thunder without rage.

"She's welcome here. The children are welcome. No one needs a screening to come to the altar."

Esther's smile wavered. "But, Pastor—"

John didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

"Jesus didn't ask for background checks before He healed people. And He didn't send anyone away because they made others uncomfortable."

A hush fell over the room.

Ruby felt her cheeks burn. Not with shame — with something else. Something new.

Hope.

Everyone was quite but some judged her loudly in their hearts

For those who knew wondered why pastor John was helping such a person while the others who didn't know were happy for pastor Johns ' stepping in

... After the Service

People left quietly, stealing glances her way.

Ruby stayed in her seat as long as she could, until only the janitor, her kids, and Pastor John remained.

He approached slowly, hands in his pockets. "Ruby, right?"

She nodded. "You remember me?"

He nodded once. "From a dream."

She swallowed. "Me too."

They stood in silence for a long moment, like the world had paused to breathe.

Then Ruby looked up. "I'm not here for sympathy. I just... needed somewhere my niece and nephew could feel safe. Even just for an hour."

"You came to the right place," he said. "You're welcome here — as many hours as you need."

Tears pricked her eyes, but she blinked them back.

Because this time, she wasn't crying in the dark.

She was standiing in the light.
