Chapter 27 - Quake

Timothy McAllister

06:00 a.m. Next Day

"Take care of yourself, Kirt boy," said Jackson King as he put his knapsack on. He added, "I know I can't take everything with me. I want you to keep all the stuff that I don't take with me."

Kirt smiled at Jackson King's kind gesture. Kirt and Jackson King were quite close. Kirt was sad that Jackson King chose to leave. He was sad because he would miss Jackson King when he was gone, and also because he was worried about Jackson King's own safety out there. If there was somebody, besides me, that Kirt wanted to not get stranded, it would be Jackson King.

"Come on King, it's time to go," said Frederick Collins as he stood near the bus' door with his knapsack on his back. Except for Weedboy Bill Lancaster, Alejandra, Zach, Fiona, and Michaela the Promiscuous, everybody who left, gave those who stayed the stuff that they couldn't take with them.

"Jackson, take care of yourself too," Kirt said.

Jackson patted Kirt's back, holding back some tears. Neither Kirt nor I could stop feeling emotional. Those who left (except for Weedboy Bill, Zach, Fiona, Michaela the Promiscuous and Alejandra) worried for the safety of those who stayed, and those who stayed worried about that of those who left.

People on both sides (except for Weedboy & Company) hugged each other before those who had chosen to leave left the bus. After staying for some time with Kirt, Jackson put on his knapsack and left the bus with the other boys who wanted to leave.

Alice Boe

It was sad to see them all go. The air was filled with an emotional feeling. As I stood in the girls' deck, I saw Candace Thomson give her best friend Emily Robinson a tight hug. As much as Candace Thomson wanted to leave, she didn't like separating from her best friend. Both of them were worried about each other. There were tears in both of their eyes.

"Take care of yourself, Candy," Emily said, helping Candace with her knapsack.

"You too," said Candace clutching Emily's hand.

Before she went downstairs, Candace gave AnnSophia and me a tight hug.

"Take care," wished AnnSophia.

Candace smiled.

Followed by Candace, Savannah walked towards the stairs of the girls' capsule.

I smiled at Savannah as Savannah walked by. At first, Savannah ignored me, but then she stopped.

With watery eyes, she ran towards me and hugged me tightly. "Take care, Alice," she said.

I was taken aback by the gesture; for, I never expected Savannah would act like that. I cried as I hugged her back.

After an exchange of hugs, we, who chose to stay, escorted those who chose to leave to the campfire spot.

Kirt Heinrich

Near the campfire, I shook the hands of Brian Campbell. Jackson King promised me that he would send help as soon as he reached civilization.

Those who chose to leave walked in the direction of the disappeared trail, after saying their goodbyes.

Before disappearing into the thick forest, Jackson King waved one last goodbye. He was the last one to disappear into the forest.

05:30 p.m.

We were all sad because, without those who left, it felt empty. For more than ten days, we had stayed together like a family, waiting for Sergio, until the split occurred. We are a family, to be honest, because to each other in Wolfgang we all were the family that we never had. All of our classmates were our brothers and sisters, and all of the teachers were like our parents. We never thought that the bus would feel empty after those who chose to leave left.

"We'll look for some food tomorrow," said Kirt.

We were all looking forward to trying our best to keep ourselves safe and to survive until Sergio, Seagale, and Gallagher returned.

We were just talking to each other when Alice suddenly got up and said, "Guys can you feel it?"

"Feel what?" I asked.

The rain, which began at 12:00 p.m that day, continued to pour upon the waving trees outside. I could see birds flying from their trees. The capsules of those who left were open. The stuff that they left behind was on their beds. The weather was all rain and gloom. Because of the thick, stormy rainclouds, it was dark even though there was one hour for the sun to set.

Everything inside and outside the bus looked normal, or so I thought.

I couldn't understand what was wrong with Alice.

Puzzled, by what Alice said, everyone became silent.

Thump! Some of the books in Brian's capsule and some of the clothes left behind by Jackson fell on the ground. Emily, who slept in a capsule, fell onto the ground with a loud thud.

The lights in my office began flickering. It was evening, and I was working on some last-minute paperwork that I had to fill out. A lot happened that day. Two girls and three boys of the Sri Lankan kids from Doha, who were visiting our dam, had disappeared two nights ago. Some of the officers at La Abuela De Princesa Irene had gone to help the teachers find the missing students.

I was surprised by the fact that the lights were flickering because we had just replaced the lights two months ago. It was strange. As I went close to the lights, my computer fell off my desk and its screen shattered as it hit the ground. I looked back at my desk and saw all the piles of paper that I worked on had fallen on the floor.

I then rushed to the window and saw the waters in the reservoir were forming huge waves, like a mini tsunami. A building next to the building where the Sri Lankan kids stayed disintegrated and fell. It was raining. I turned back and looked at the huge screen on the wall inside the office.

The screen was shaking

Clink!Boom!

The huge screen on the wall collapsed, shattering. The officers who were in the area where the screen fell narrowly missed being killed by that huge, heavy screen crushing them as it fell.

I knew what all those anomalies meant.

It was something we all feared.

The earth was shaking.

It was an Earthquake.

The buildings that flanked the road began collapsing and disintegrating. I was stuck on the road ever since the bridge collapsed early morning on the previous day. It was raining cats and dogs outside. The road began to crack, and one person who was standing outside fell into the deep crack. It was a sight of pure horror and chaos. Screams of panic were piercing through my eardrums.

"To the right!" yelled Kirt as he, Alice, Timothy, Tom, and Rhett ran towards the right side of the bus, trying to give it a counter push to the right side. They grunted as they pushed and slammed themselves against the walls of the right side of the bus, trying to stop the bus from tipping over its left side. The bus was balancing on its two wheels on the left side. It was wobbling, about to fall over. We tried our best to stop the bus from doing that.

Thud!

The bus landed on all four wheels without tipping over. Then once again it began tipping, but this time towards the right side.

Kirt yelled, "To the left!"

We rushed to the left side to do the same thing that we did to the right side.

After a long struggle of running to both sides frequently, we managed to make the bus stay on all fours without it tipping over.

By the time the bus returned to its normal position, the earthquake was over.

We all heaved sighs of relief.

Somebody's loud cries were heard.

It was Emily. She sprained her ankle.
