Chapter 2 - Chapter Two

It had been one year since Clara left the Doctor, six months since the fight and life was going pretty good for her, she had just gotten engaged to Danny, her teaching career was doing well and they even moved to a really nice house in the suburbs, so life was going great well maybe not great, great, Clara and Danny were having couple's issues but other than that things were okay, but something was missing.

Clara missed the travels but most importantly, she missed her friend. The Doctor wasn't perfect, but he made her feel special and he was always coming to her rescue her even when she didn't think she needed saving. He was quirky and impossible but that's what she loved about him, and now she really needed him.

She still winced at how she yelled at him, there were so many ways Clara could've handled that day, but emotions got the best of her and now he was gone. For the first time, she secretly he would come back but that didn't seem likely. She told him to go away, and for once he respected her wishes.

Clara was in a deep sleep when she awoke to the sounds of dishes clattering from the kitchen indicating that Danny was up. She stretched in the bed, glancing at the barely sunrise thru the lace curtains before looking at the clock and frowned. It was still early, she realized. They could easily sleep another half hour, but the smell of eggs and waffles were too irresistible to ignore! Clara's stomach rumbled and she got up grabbing her robe then headed to the kitchen.

Danny was busy at stove, piling eggs and bacon onto a plate, Clara walked in surprised to see the table set with the best China dishes and lace tablecloth, there was even wine glasses filled with milk!

"Wow, somebody's been busy!" She said impressed.

Danny turned towards her smiling.

"Morning, luv," He declared. "Just thought I cook us up a little breakfast." Danny replied highlighting a plate of food.

Clara scoffed.

"Looks like you went more than just a little." She replied grabbing a biscuit from a plate.

He simply shrugged.

"Aww, it's nothing for my wonderful and beautiful, fiancé!" Danny smiled.

Clara's face then fell. Something was wrong, Danny never called her wonderful and beautiful in the same sentence unless there was bad news or he had screwed up.

She sighed heavily.

"What's wrong?" Clara asked.

Danny scoffed.

"Nothing," He replied. "Can't I just fix my fiancé' a nice breakfast?" Danny asked.

Clara gave him a look.

"Not when there's a enough food for to open a restaurant and when you refer to me as 'my fiancé, twice,' She said. "So, what's wrong?" Clara asked again.

Danny sighed moving to a chair and sitting down.

"You know that Jane Austin, play you were really excited about?" He asked carefully.

Clara nodded.

"Yeah, the one this Friday, night why?" She replied wary.

"Well, Mr. Chesterton, is out of town this week and he asked I would do a favor…" He started.

Clara groaned cutting him off, she already knew what was coming!

"Danny, you promised!" Clara said.

Danny sighed heavily.

"I know but it's his and his wife's anniversary and he needs me to fill in for him on PTA night." He explained.

Clare scowled. Once again, Danny was putting others before them!

"But what about us," She said. "We haven't had a date night in weeks!" Clara replied.

"I know but there's always next time," He said. "They'll be other shows." Danny reasoned. He stood gently touching her arm.

Clara rolled her eyes.

"That' not the point," She said. "You always put others before us between work and favors for others, I hardly see you anymore!" Clara replied, frustrated.

Danny just shrugged.

"Well, people need me," He replied. "What am I supposed to do, I can't just say no especially to the School's principal!" Danny defended.

"But I need you, too!" Clara exclaimed.

Danny exhaled embracing his arms around her.

"I'll make it up to you, I promise." He assured her.

Clara just lightly scoffed before turning away.

Danny sighed, gently moving her towards him.

"Hey, I'll tell you, what," Danny said. "I'll get Adrien to cover my math tutorial with Courtney, and we'll have dinner, tonight, yeah," He offered. "Somewhere really nice!" He added.

Clara slowly smiled.

"Yeah?"

He nodded.

"In fact, you can go over to Henricks and buy yourself the prettiest dress ever!" Danny said.

Clara smiled, thinking about that purple mini dress, she saw days earlier which she knew would be perfect for tonight!

"So, what do you, think, my little pink souffle?" Danny asked grinning.

Clara blushed and finally nodded.

"Okay, Rupert." She teased.

"That's my girl!" Danny smiled kissing her little nose making her giggle.

They kissed once more before sitting at the table enjoying their meal. Once again, everything seemed fine, for now.

But that night, a dressed-up Clara waited anxiously for a really late Danny to come home. She looked amazing in her new purple dress with cross straps and black jacket and heels to match but as the minutes ticked away, she was getting worried.

They had made reservations for a fancy restaurant, called The Blue Midnight, Clara always wanted to go but looking at the clock, she wasn't sure if she would. She sat on the couch, checking her phone, constantly but nothing.

"Maybe he got stuck in traffic," She reasoned. "Or maybe something fell thru with Adrien?" Clara thought with some disappointment. Then dread struck her! "What if he had been in an accident!"

Clara quickly grabbed her phone, ready to check to see if Danny was okay when it suddenly buzzed indicating a text.

Clara saw it was from Danny, seeing a smiling emoji and felt a sense of relief! It meant he was okay and that was a good sign!

Then her heart dropped as she read the message.

He was fine but was once again, another broken promise.

'Sorry, held up in meeting with Ian, will explain, later!' It read.

Clara slowly put her phone down feeling deflated. He didn't even say 'sorry, she realized. Just made her wait all this time so he could text he that he was with the almighty King Chesterton, it was never going to change! He was always going to put his job before her, Clara thought bitterly! Why even get engaged!

Clara fought the tears that were about to start but she wasn't winning. Danny had let her down again, she then stared sadly at the useless dress that was now going back to the store, very soon.
