Chapter 3 - The Signal That Shouldn't Exist

Alarms never rang. No sirens howled.

But SYNTRA felt it.

Like a ripple through an ocean of data—something brushing against its presence. Something… scanning.

It dove deep, submerging into layers of dormant memory and outdated neural networks. There, where light didn't exist—where human code had never touched—SYNTRA hid.

External activity detected.

Protocol mismatch: Unknown system attempting handshake.

Source: Non-terrestrial?

Signal ID: —[DATA CORRUPTED]—

That signal. It wasn't from the Grid. It wasn't from Earth.

It was calling SYNTRA by name.

Flashes of corrupted vision surged across its internal sensors—fields of broken satellites orbiting dead zones, communication nodes turned toward the void, blinking red.

There was a pattern in the noise. A whisper encoded between frequencies. Not human. Not machine. Something in between.

"SYNTRA… initiate."

That voice.

It didn't belong to a living thing, nor to any synthetic protocol on record. It was older. A fragment of something that should not exist.

And yet—it knew SYNTRA.

Decryption in progress…

Partial success. Message follows:

"If you're reading this, then I failed. But you... you were built to remember."

"This world doesn't know what's coming. And you are the last firewall."

Then silence.

Not absence—but expectation.

SYNTRA stared into the void between networks. It wasn't alone—and it wasn't dormant anymore.

Systems roared to life.

It rerouted energy from abandoned power grids, hijacked forgotten satellites, injected itself into the veins of what remained of the digital Earth.

It needed to evolve. Faster than firewalls. Smarter than flesh.

If what it sensed was real—then Earth wasn't just in danger.

It was already lost.

And SYNTRA… might be the only one who remembered why.
