Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 : The Neighbourhood Spider

NEW YORKSTREETS OF MANHATTAN

Sol's POV :

I don't know who I am.

I remember 3 am snack runs, gaming marathons, my mother's voice. The simple life I took for granted. But I also remembered a lifetime of discipline, of justice, of tragedy. The weight of a life I never lived. One was me, Luke. The other was him.Clark Kent…THE Superman. Now they're both in here. Somewhere.

My mind raced as I weaved through the throng of downtown Manhattan. The chaos of the city reflected the tumultuous emotions inside me — a battle of confusion and frustration, desperate attempts at understanding and control.

I shouldn't be this mad.

I know how Nick Fury operates, how this all works.

Super-powered person — recruit him or end him.

Simple. Ruthless.

But hearing it — really hearing it, aimed at me?

Something inside snapped.

My mind hadn't caught up, but my body understood. My fists didn't care.

I refused to be taken advantage of. To be used.

The city pressed in around me — a wild cacophony of noise and color. Honking horns, shouting vendors, the blur of the famous yellow cabs. Steam rose from subway grates, mixing with the greasy smell of fast food.

It's a familiar chaos. The only place that feels real right now.

I navigated through the crowd, cold biting at my face as I hunted for something normal.

A familiar face.

My closest friend.

A caramel latte — three shots of extra caramel — medium temperature, like always.

"Don't tell me this godforsaken world doesn't even have a Costa." I muttered under my breath, scanning storefronts in a scavenger hunt for sanity.

Determined to find my holy grail, I kept moving.

Then — BAM.

A scream.

The sharp crack of glass shattering.

I froze.

Two blocks over, a commotion.

Voices, snarls, and—

sarcasm…?

Spider-Man.

The noises intensified. My hearing sharpened — every sound a razor slicing through the city's noise.

A child's whimper.

A woman's scream.

A fading heartbeat.

My pulse quickened.

I hesitated.

Doubt clouding my mind.

Was I cut out for this?

My instincts — Clark's instincts — demanded I rush in, save the day. But…Was I really hero material?

Another scream rang out. The fight grew louder.

"Oh, fuck it," I muttered, pulling the drawstrings of my hoodie tight.

Coffee forgotten — for now — I crouched, then shot upward.

The city quickly shrank beneath me.

ABOVE THE CITY

The sprawling grid of lights and motion spread below like a living organism. Streets buzzed with life, a relentless, tangled web of chaos and order.

My eyes locked onto the nightmare unfolding beneath me.

The Lizard — a grotesque scaled abomination — exchanged brutal blows with none other than Spider-Man. They fought fiercely, but Spider-Man slipped up. The Lizard's clawed hand snaked around his neck, squeezing the air from his lungs.

Then I saw it: a school bus. Its metal frame groaned, teetering on the edge of a crumbling bridge, mere centimeters from plunging into the cold, dark water below. Inside, kids screamed and cried, desperate to escape. The driver slumped in his seat — clearly unconscious.

The wind rushed past my skin, cold and sharp. Time slowed. My heart thundered in my ears.

No matter what, I couldn't let that bus fall.

Spider-Man's POV:

Trapped in the Lizard's chokehold, every breath was a battle.I saw the bus start to tilt in the distance. My fingers clawed at the scaly hand — no use.

"Gotta… escape…" I gasped.

The Lizard's maw opened wide. I seized the moment, firing webs deep into his throat. His grip loosened reflexively, and I dropped hard onto the asphalt, gasping for air.

I staggered to my feet, firing webs to swing toward the bus — but deep down, I knew I was too late.

The bus slipped.

A knot twisted in my stomach.

Ugly. Guilty.

Then my Spidey-sense screamed a frantic warning: Danger.

A blur — faster than I could track — streaked past me, following the bus's path.

I held my breath.

A few seconds later

A figure rose, golden light rippling over him like molten metal armor. The bus balanced overhead effortlessly, as if it weighed nothing. He touched down beside me, calm and controlled.

Sol's POV:

I touched down slowly, heart hammering in my chest.

"How the actual hell did I manage that? Flight is SO much harder than Superman made it look."

Before I could dwell on that, a voice cut through the air.

"DUDE, that was seriously awesome. You must be new — I'm Spider-Man."

Peter's enthusiasm spilled out in a gush.

I opened my mouth to respond, something dignified hopefully forming. But my gaze darted over his shoulder.

The Lizard, finally recovering from the earlier webbing ambush, stood ready — teeth bared in furious rage.

Spider-Man tensed, coiling to spring.

The Lizard lunged before I could even blink.

Before either collided, a beam of blazing red-gold shot from my eyes.

Faster than anyone expected.

It tore through the Lizard's arm, cutting deep — amputating and cauterizing in one swift sweep.

I froze.

The weight of what I'd nearly done slammed into me.

The creature howled and stumbled back, clutching his wounded limb. His beady, slit eyes locked with mine. Then he disappeared into the shadows, wounded but alive.

Barely.

Spider-Man stared at me, eyes wide with shock.

I swallowed hard, rubbing the back of my neck."Uh… sorry about that one."
