Chapter 2 - #2

After that day, Mak Du Du began having strange dreams. In them, she stood atop a misty mountain. In the distance stood a man in a black cloak, his back turned, facing a cliff that overlooked a deep abyss.

She couldn't see his face, but his cold voice echoed clearly:

> "Du Du, I can't make you stay… but I also can't let you forget me."

That dream repeated, hauntingly.

One evening, unable to resist, she asked Chen Mo:

> "Do you believe in reincarnation?"

Chen Mo was silent for a long time. Only after a while did he say:

> "I do. Because I've waited for someone… through two lifetimes."

Chen Mo handed her a necklace — the pendant was a dusky violet stone, engraved with an ancient symbol.

> "This necklace belongs to you. You left it with me… a long time ago."

> "I don't understand…"

> "It's alright. You will. When the time is right."

From the moment she wore the necklace, Du Du's dreams became clearer. She saw herself in another life — a girl from a distant era, gifted with the same ability to "hear souls." And the man in the black cloak — it was Chen Mo, but with a different name: Ye Mo — a cursed sorcerer, unable to reincarnate, wandering through centuries… waiting for her.

Piece by piece, the memories returned.

In her past life, she was a Soul Listener, one who could hear and soothe wandering spirits.

Ye Mo — back then — had been cursed: immortal, yet alone.

They fell in love, but the curse tore them apart.

To free him, Du Du had sacrificed herself, wiping the memories of both and choosing to reincarnate.

But Chen Mo… had never forgotten.

He walked through centuries, clinging to his memories, living among humans like a shadow — just for a single chance to see her again.

When Mak Du Du finally remembered everything, a voice echoed in her mind:

> "To remember is to pay a price. You will lose your current ability — you will no longer hear the hearts of others."

Du Du stood at a crossroads:

To keep her strange gift and live a safe but lonely life.

Or… give up the ability, to become who she truly was — someone who had once loved, sacrificed, and was now loved once more.

She chose him.

From that moment, all inner voices went silent. The world grew quiet — but no longer frightening.

Because by her side was someone she didn't need to read to understand.

And Chen Mo — for the first time in centuries — cried.

We now follow two intertwined timelines: the present and their past life.

Secrets of the curse slowly unravel. Mak Du Du's true identity is revealed, and a dark force begins to rise — one that seeks to erase both their memories and their souls.

One autumn morning, Mak Du Du woke in a sunlit apartment, her heart light.

Her ability to hear thoughts — completely gone.

Everything now felt "normal," and yet… strangely unfamiliar.

Chen Mo was making tea in the kitchen. Wearing a slightly wrinkled white shirt, his hair tousled, he looked lazy — and irresistibly charming. No longer an immortal sorcerer. No longer a man cursed by fate. Just… the man she loved.

> "I made you osmanthus tea," he said.

"You used to love it. In your past life."

Du Du froze. That scent… was oddly familiar.

And suddenly, the dream returned.

It was Cloud Valley — a sacred land nestled in the deep forest and mountains.

Back then, she was Yun Du, the youngest Soul Listener entrusted with the Seal of Spirits — an artifact that could bind wandering souls.

And Ye Mo, once a traitor sorcerer of the Spirit Sect, had been accused of using blood magic for immortality. But Yun Du knew the truth: he had merely given up a piece of his soul… to save her during a failed sealing ritual.

To save her, he was branded, cursed:

Unable to die.

Unable to love.

Unable to reincarnate.

> "I don't regret my life," Ye Mo once said.

"I only regret… I may never hear you call me 'Mo ge' again."

Back to the present.

Du Du and Chen Mo lived peacefully, day by day.

But one night, she received an unsigned letter written in red ink:

> "You think the curse is broken?

It's not.

The memories may return,

but hearts… not always."

That very evening, she saw a reflection in the mirror — a man with Chen Mo's face… but eyes as empty as death.

Chen Mo finally confessed:

Each time he loved again, each time he came close to finding her, "it" — the dark fragment of his cursed soul — grew stronger.

That fragment was now trying to merge with him — to fully take over his body, achieving true, eternal immortality.

> "I'm losing myself… again," he said.

"And this time, if you don't save me… no one will."

Du Du simply looked at him, then whispered:

> "Then I'll learn again

I'll learn to hear the voice of the soul,

but this time…

I'll go deep into yours.

To bring you back."
