Chapter 9 - Chapter Nine Notes

After a half-hour break, he believed that Kai Lin's Zhou Mingrui had recovered. During this time, he noticed that there were four black dots on the back of his right hand, forming a small square.

These black dots darkened and faded quickly, disappearing completely. However, Klein knew that they still remained inside his body, waiting to be awakened.

"Four points, a square. Could it be that the four corners correspond to four portions of the main food? In the future, I won't need to prepare the main food anymore. I can directly perform the steps and incantations?" Klein had a vague guess.

This seemed good, but there were some strange origins, and the "things" lacking understanding always made people afraid.

Thinking about the inexplicable magic on Earth being effective here, the strange穿越in his dream, the mysterious, hallucinatory, and unknown gray fog world, and the whispering voices wandering around the "ritual" that made him almost go crazy, Klein couldn't help but shiver uncontrollably, even in the hot weather at the end of June.

He had once heard a saying: "The oldest and most intense emotion of humans is fear, and the oldest and most intense fear is the fear of the unknown." Now, he deeply experienced the fear that originated from the unknown.

Unprecedented, uncontrollable, he had a strong impulse to contact the mysterious realm and learn more, to dispel the unknown. There were also thoughts of burying his head and pretending that nothing had happened as an escape.

The sunlight outside was strong, covering the desk with a layer of "gold powder". Klein gazed at it, as if touching a glimmer of warmth and hope.

He relaxed a little, and immediately felt a surging tide of fatigue surging out.

The lack of sleep last night and the consumption just now made his eyelids heavy like lead, unable to stop drooping.

He shook his head and reached out to support the edge of the table, not caring about cleaning the black wheat bread placed at the four corners, staggering to the bunk bed, and as soon as he lay down, touching the pillow, he fell asleep.

Grrr! Grrr!

Hunger woke Klein up. He opened his eyes, feeling refreshed.

"Except for my head, it's still a little painful." He rubbed his forehead, turned over and sat up, feeling that he could eat an entire cow now.

He straightened the wrinkles of his clothes while returning to the desk, picking up the silver-white watch with the vine pattern.

Click!

The bullet cover opened, and the second hand ticked away.

"Half past twelve, I slept for more than three hours..." Klein swallowed saliva and put the watch into the linen shirt pocket.

In the North Continent, a day is also divided into twenty-four hours, each hour sixty minutes, and each minute sixty seconds. As for the length of each second and whether it is the same as the Earth, Klein had no idea.

For him, at this moment, even the words "mysticism", "ritual", "gray fog world" couldn't enter his mind. The most important thing at the moment was food, food!

Only by eating can we think! Can we do things!

Without hesitation, Klein took the black wheat bread from the four corners again, brushed off the few dust particles that were stuck on it, and planned to use one of them as the main food for lunch.

Because his hometown had the custom of sharing sacrificial offerings after the ceremony, and these four black wheat breads didn't seem to have changed at all, in a situation where he only had pennies in his pocket, he felt that one should still be thrifty.

Of course, there were subtle influences from the original owner's memory fragments and living habits.

Because the gas was too expensive, using it for lighting made him feel heartbroken. He moved the stove, added some coal, and Klein paced back and forth, waiting for the water to boil.

That black wheat bread would choke you if eaten dry!

"Hey, won't we have to have black bread for breakfast, black bread for lunch, and meat for dinner... No, if it weren't for Melissa considering my upcoming interview, I could only have meat twice a week..." With nothing to do and unable to think about serious issues due to hunger, Klein looked around.

Thinking of that pound of lamb meat, his gaze on the cupboard seemed to turn a little green.

"No, no. We have to wait for Melissa to eat it together," Klein shook his head vigorously, denying the idea of cutting half of it now.

As a single person living in a big city, although he mainly ate out, his basic cooking skills had still been honed. They weren't that good, but they were sufficient.

Turning around, Klein intended to pretend it was nothing and move on. But at that moment, he suddenly remembered that besides buying the meat, he also bought tender peas and potatoes!

Potatoes! Klein suddenly had an inspiration and spun back quickly, rushing to the cupboard, taking out two from the limited potatoes.

He first went to the public restroom to clean the surface of the potatoes thoroughly, then directly put them into the pot and boiled them with water.

After a while, he took out the spice box from the cupboard, opened the lid, and sprinkled a little yellowish and rough salt into the water.

After patiently waiting for a few more minutes, Klein picked up the pot and poured the so-called "soup" into several cups, into a large bowl, and finally forked out the two potatoes and placed them on the table.

Whew!

He peeled off a little skin and blew on it, the aroma of the cooked potatoes slowly spread, tempting the appetite.

His saliva was flowing crazily, Klein couldn't help but take a big bite without bothering to finish half of them or waiting for them to cool down. He picked up the pot and poured the "soup" that wasn't really soup into several cups and into a large bowl. Finally, he forked out the two potatoes and placed them on the table.

On May 16th, Senior Associate Professor Cohen and Mr. Azek discussed the inevitability of the Steam Age. Mr. Azek believed it was accidental. Had it not been for the sudden appearance of Emperor Rosel, perhaps the North Continent would still be in the same state as the South Continent, remaining in the era of cold weapons. The supervisor thought he was overly emphasizing the role of the individual. He believed that with the development of the times, even without Emperor Rosel or Emperor Robert, the Steam Age would surely come. Regarding their debate, I only felt it was meaningless. I prefer to discover new things and restore the history shrouded in mystery. Maybe I shouldn't have studied History but should have studied Archaeology instead. ...

"On May 29th, Welch came to me and said that he had obtained a fourth millennium-era notebook. My goddess, the fourth millennium notebook! He didn't want to ask his classmates in the archaeology department, but wanted to ask me and Naya to help interpret the contents. How could I possibly refuse such a request? Of course, it had to be arranged after the graduation defense. At this time, I couldn't be distracted."

Seeing this, Klein's spirit lifted. Compared to the previous history reading notes and ideological debates, the newly emerged "Fourth Millennium" notebook was more likely to lead the original owner to commit suicide.

The Fourth Millennium was the era before the "Black Iron Age", and its history was full of mysteries and many omissions. Even the unearthed tombs, ancient cities, and documents were scarce. Historians and archaeologists could only barely piece together a "rough version" of the past by relying on the ambiguous and faith-based theology scriptures of the seven major churches. They knew about the existence of the Solomon Empire, the Tudor Dynasty, and the Tronesost Empire.

Challenging the fog and restoring history, Klein had little interest in the more mythological and legendary "Pre-Millennium" period, only caring about the "Fourth Millennium", also known as the "Age of the Gods". The excitement was obvious.

"Hey, just by looking at it, the original owner valued the interview and worried about future employment. There's no need for that... " Klein couldn't help exclaiming.

Currently, universities are still scarce, and the vast majority of students are noble children and children from wealthy families. Even if a commoner enters, as long as they don't face discrimination due to their status and aren't included in others' social circles, as long as they are not extreme, they can still gain certain social resources through group discussions and collective activities. Such precious social resources!

For example, Welch McGavin was the son of a banker in the inter-kingdom sea county of Conston in the Kingdom of Ruin. He was straightforward and generous in his spending. Because he had been in the same group with Klein and Naya doing homework and reports for a long time, he was accustomed to asking them for help.

Without much divergent thinking, Klein continued to read the notebook:

"June 18th, graduated. Farewell, my Hoy University!"

"June 19th, I saw that notebook. After comparing the structure, roots, etc., I found that it was a variant of the ancient Fussak language, more precisely, for over a thousand years, the ancient Fussak language had been evolving slightly."

"June 20th, we interpreted the content of the first page. The author was a member of the 'Antigonus' family."

"June 21st, he mentioned 'Black Emperor', which was completely contradictory to the content derived from the previous parts. Could the teacher's opinion be wrong? 'Black Emperor' was actually the common title of every emperor of the Solomon Empire?"

"June 22nd, this 'Antigonus' family seemed to have a prominent position in the Solomon Empire. The notebook owner mentioned that he was conducting a secret transaction with someone called Tudor. Tudor? The Tudor Dynasty?"

"June 23rd, I controlled myself not to think about that notebook, not to go to Welch, I had to prepare for the interview! This is a very important matter!"

"June 24th, Naya told me that they had new findings. I think I should go and have a look."

"June 25th, from the newly interpreted content, the owner of the notebook accepted a task to go to the summit of the 'Horanicus' mountains, to visit the 'Night Country' at the top. My goddess, the summit of the Horanicus mountains is over six thousand meters high. How could there be a country? What did they rely on for survival!"

"June 26th, are these strange things real?"

At this point, the notebook ended. Zhou Mingrui crossed over at 4 a.m. on June 28th.

"Meaning, the notebook from June 27th actually exists, it's that sentence... 'Everyone will die, including me'..." Klein turned to the page he first saw, feeling a bit horrified and making a judgment. He felt that to solve the mystery of the original owner's suicide, he should go to Welch's place and take another look at the contents of the ancient notes. But with his rich experience in novels, movies and TV series, he felt that if he went, if the matter was indeed related, he would most likely encounter unknown dangers - those who still went to their deaths despite knowing there were ghosts in the old castle were a warning!

But not going was not an option. Evading would never solve the problem; it would only make things worse and larger, until they burst and flooded everything, completely drowning oneself!

Call the police? You can't say I committed suicide...

Bang!

Bang bang!

Suddenly, a rapid and forceful knocking sound came from the door.

Klein sat up straight and listened attentively.

Bang!

Bang bang!

The knocking sound echoed through the empty and desolate corridor of the floor.
