Chapter 1 - WHEN WE WERE WHOLE

The scene opens in a grand estate—the residence of the Zheng family, known as the wealthiest merchant clan in all of the Qin Empire.

The garden buzzed with life. Servants hurried back and forth, all busy with tasks. Their long sleeves fluttered like birds in flight. The air was rich with the scent of steamed buns, sweet rice wine, and braised pork.

In a private courtyard, laughter rang out like the song of a small bird.

There, an eight-year-old girl with a bright, sun-kissed face wobbled around with a large wooden sword. Her delicate features were charming. Jet-black hair flowed freely behind her as she struggled to lift the heavy, wood-carved weapon. She adjusted her robe clumsily, determined not to fall.

A soft, amused voice cut through the air.

"Zheng Xin, why are you playing with such a big sword again?" her mother scolded gently. "Why must a girl like you practice swordsmanship instead of learning the qin or embroidery—something more fitting for a lady?"

Still trying to balance the sword, the little girl, Lianfu, replied in a serious tone.

"I'm practicing martial arts so I can protect myself, my mom, my father, and my big brother."

Nearby, her older brother, Zheng Jun, about twelve years old, was sharpening wooden practice swords. He lifted his head and chuckled.

"Well said, little sister. The great general of the Zheng family!" he teased.

Their father, Zheng Lian, stepped into the courtyard. Smiling warmly, he lifted Lianfu into his arms and said,

"I can't wait to see my daughter grow up and protect us all with this tiny sword."

Laughter burst out from everyone.

Their mother ruffled Lianfu's hair and sighed with a smile.

"That's enough, all of you. Talking about generals and battles… Come, the food is getting cold."

The family of four gathered around a stone table in the garden. Their laughter filled the evening air as the sun slowly dipped below the horizon. It was a rare moment of peace and warmth.

After some time, Zheng Lian turned to his wife.

"Dear, the silk ships for the Southern Province are ready. I'll be sailing to Yangzhou at first light tomorrow. I want to inspect the new warehouse myself. I'll be taking Jun'er with me—it's time he learns the ways of the family business."

His wife nodded approvingly.

"That's good. He should start understanding his responsibilities as the future head of the family."

Little Lianfu piped up excitedly.

"Father! I want to come too!"

Zheng Lian chuckled and gently tapped her nose.

"No, my little general. You must stay home and protect your mother—and this entire household—while I'm away."

Lianfu straightened her back and nodded with pride.

"Yes, Father. I promise I'll protect everyone while you're gone."

Zheng Lian smiled as he walked past her, giving her head a light pat.

"That's my great general."

Light fades.
