Chapter 1 - A New Case

It was a peaceful in the month of May. The summer's relentless attacks were at the peak. Birds were flying across the sky, searching for a place to rest. Just as they found a branch to sit on, a water bottle came flying out of nowhere, hitting three birds at once.

"I am telling you this is the biggest job of my entire life! You guys have to believe me!" yelled a woman, who was the very 'protagonist' of this novel. Her name was Charlotte Green. She was a private detective. Although, she was in the military before she left due to some personal reasons.

"Is that correct? You will be damned if I believe you. Do pray tell me what kind of job we are taking about?" said a dog… a 'talking' dog. Now, it did seem weird to have a talking dog as a pet… but the plot demanded it.

Charlotte looked at her other pet. "You do know it looks weird when I talk to you two 'pets' of mine. Honestly, I have never understood the reason why I am the only one to understand your barking and meowing."

The cat 'meowed' in offence. His orange fur glistened in the sunlight. He grumbled, "Can we at least have an AC in our office? My fur will get churned from this much heat! Do you have no care for my wellbeing?"

Fern shook his head. He barked loudly. With a huff, he said, "I am better than you, Sam. At the very least, I am not a drama queen."

"No one is comparing me with you, Sam! And for the record, cats are better than dogs!"

"No! Dogs are better than cats!"

"No! No! Cats are!"

"Dogs are!"

"Cats are!"

"Dogs!"

"Cats!"

"Dogs!"

"Cats!"

"OK! That's enough! ENOUGH!" Charlotte shouted. The two of them sneered at each other and turned their heads away. Sweat was dripping from her forehead like a waterfall. She wiped it with a handkerchief and threw it on the table.

Sighing, Charlotte sat on the chair. Fern and Sam jumped on the table and sat with their backs turned against each other.

Charlotte said, "Look! This is the best case we are going to get. With the help of this case, we can show everyone how great our team is. 'The Green Force' also know as 'TGF,' will show its power to everyone. The world will know us!"

Sam gave her a disgusted look. "You were sneaking around the police station, weren't you?" His words were full of sarcasm. It was too much for her to bear.

Fern chuckled, "No client approached you, did they? All you are famous is being known as a 'wishy washy.' I am telling you, don't involve yourself in that case. Cops are very volatile these days."

Charlotte snorted, "They won't arrest me. I am certain of it!"

"Maybe they will send her to a mental hospital. Honestly, I don't give a damn about her!" said Sam, flicking his tail to the left side.

"I am your master! Have you forgotten this very thing?! I feed you?" yelled Charlotte.

Fern barked at her. Angered by her words, he asked, "The cheap dog food that you bring from the supermarket? The one which smells like shit? Nah, thank you. You can eat it yourself." It wasn't that he didn't love his master. It was just that his master was… useless. She could never perfectly do a job assigned to her. There wasn't even a single case in which she hadn't messed up something. In most of the cases, she messed up everything. For him, being her pet was very taxing.

"You don't think like that, do you? You remember I brought you home when I was just a little girl, right? I know you will be always loyal to me, Sam. I am telling you the man who told that a dog is a man's best friend is an idiot. My darling is the best, isn't it?" Charlotte looked at Sam with pleading eyes.

Sam gave a sweet smile to her. It was so sweet that Charlotte looked away. He said, "Ah, it calms my soul to know that you believe cats are better than dogs. But do you know Fredrick Dalton's cat eats meat once a day. As for me, I don't get meat to eat. Not even once a month! His fur looks so shiny but mine looks as dull as your face!"

Charlotte slammed her hands on the table.

"I will tell you one thing! I. Am. Beautiful. And you look much better than Fredrick's cat. Don't compare yourself with my enemy's cat," sneered Charlotte.

Sam snarled, "Don't try to flatter me!"

Fern laughed, "Yeah! He looks like shit. I am much better than him."

"You are not helping, Fern. Both of you are my best pets. I mean, in your respective species. I love you both, and most importantly, I care for you," said Charlotte. Her voice was full of emotions. There were unshed tears in her eyes, threatening to spill out any second. Not wanting to show her vulnerability, she closed her eyes and opened her arms.

"My dear pets, please show me love and in return, I will show my unbound, honest and unselfish love for you. My love for your is way past infinity!" yelled Charlotte.

Sam and Fern turned towards each other and shared a secretive look.

Charlotte smiled as if she knew the two of them would come running towards her, giving her a hug to show how much they loved her. But nothing happened.

"Guys? Come on! Give your mommy a hug!"

"No need to feel shy~"

"Guys?"

"Guys!"

"GUYS!"

She waited and waited… and waited. But nothing happened. Her arms were starting to ache now. Annoyed, she opened her eyes and found the two of them missing. With a loud thud, she jumped out of her chair and yelled, "Fine! If you don't want to work on this case, then I will! Remember, it will because of me! The TFA's name will soar in heavens itself! And you two will be regretting everything! BYE!"

Charlotte took her bag and left her private office, closing the door with a bang.
