CHAPTER 17
"SIENNA!!" Juliet's voice echoed through the house, sharp and loud.
My eyes snapped to my room door. Lorenzo had locked it earlier, so she must be outside.
I glanced over at him. He was sitting on the edge of the bed, his eyes glued to his phone, a disturbed look crawling across his face.
Without a word, I quickly grabbed my clothes from the floor, slipped into them, and stood up.
"What's she doing here?" I mumbled under my breath, with my brows furrowing. My gaze lifted again to Lorenzo. He hadn't moved, he was still staring at his screen like it was the one thing anchoring him.
"What's wrong?" I asked, walking closer to him.
He finally looked up, but his eyes were different. They held something I couldn't read. He put the phone to his pocket and stood up.
"Let's go," he muttered, heading for the door.
"Huh?" I rushed to block his path, standing in front of him with my arms stretched wide. "Are you seriously going to let her see you in the house?" I asked, my voice rising with disbelief.
"So what, I should hide? And wait till she leaves?" he snapped.
I flinched a little, not expecting the sudden sharpness in his tone.
His eyes became cold with something I couldn't understand.
I could barely believe this was the same man who had held me just moments ago, the same man who had whispered against my skin like I meant something.
But now he was standing there like none of it ever happened, like I was just another problem he had to walk around.
He shifted slightly, but his jaw stayed clenched at his side.
I felt something tighten in my chest. My arms trembled slightly where they hung in the air, and I lowered them slowly, watching his face for any sign that he might soften but it didn't.
I stepped closer to him, my hand reaching for his shirt.
"What did I do? Why are you being like this, we were just fine some minutes ago?"
He didn't answer right away. Instead, his eyes narrowed at me like I was the problem.
"Can't you tell your friend you're busy? And why the heck would she come at this moment?"
"Loren…"
He pulled my hand off him gently, and stormed out of my room, his footsteps echoing down the stairs.
I followed after him quickly. "What are you doing?" I asked, trailing close behind.
He didn't say a word. He just headed straight for the door and yanked it open.
I froze right there at the top of the stairs, my heart skipped a bit.
He walked out without looking back, and I could hear his car drive off in a distance
I ran to the door and poked my head out, scanning the entrance.
There was no one there.
"What?" I whispered, confusion curling in my chest. "Where is she?"
I stepped out a little further, looking left and right. But found nothing.I had clearly heard her voice earlier.
Closing the door slowly, I leaned against it for a second, trying to process everything.
Maybe it was better this way. At least she didn't get to see Lorenzo. I didn't even have any excuse ready if she had.
But still... Why was he acting like that? We were fine earlier today. Did I do something wrong?
I walked back into my room, my chest tightening.
Just then, my phone beeped on the table. I moved toward it and picked it up.
It was Juliet. I tapped on the message.
"Babes, I dropped by your house but no one seems to be at home."
I let out a sigh and dropped the phone back on the table.
Dragging myself to the bed, I sat on the edge, my shoulders slumped.
My mind wouldn't stop circling around Lorenzo. The way he acted, the look in his eyes
Something was definitely wrong.
"Shit," I muttered under my breath, gripping the bedspread.
I rolled over and sat upright again, rubbing my face.
"Should I call him?"
I stood up and walked back to the table, picked up my phone, and dialed his number.
It rang once… then twice… then ended.
I dialed again. Same result.
"Arghh," I groaned, ruffling my hair in frustration, dropping it on the table back.
Then my phone buzzed. I jumped and grabbed it without even checking the ID, already thinking it was him
"Hi!" I said, my voice a bit too hopeful.
"Hi, sis," a different voice answered.
I pulled the phone away from my ear and checked the screen.
It was Evelyn. My sister.
I groaned silently.
Why does she call? She never calls unless she wants something, or something's wrong. I honestly forget I even have a sister sometimes.
"Sis, are you there?" she asked, pulling me back into the moment.
"Hi, Evelyn. How are you?" I asked, already walking out of my room, trying to keep my voice calm.
"I'm fine. I was thinking of coming home. Can you send me a transport fare?"
I scoffed, unable to stop the laugh that came with it. "Do you even realize you only call when you need something?"
I could almost picture her rolling her eyes.
"When do you expect me to call? When you're busy fucking your boyfriend or what?" she fired back, her voice was sharp.
That hit a nerve.
I was already annoyed and frustrated by Lorenzo, and now she was just making it worse.
She was only eighteen, yet sometimes she talked like she owned the world.
I clenched my jaw, trying not to explode.
"Sis, are you still there?" she asked again.
"I'm hanging up," I said, my voice flat.
"Please, help me send it. I'm done with my exams. I can't be the only one left in school. I've been trying Mum's number too, it's not rea—"
I hung up before she could finish.
I stormed into the kitchen, yanked the freezer open, and grabbed a bottle of water.
I leaned against the counter, the cool bottle pressed against my palm, but it didn't calm the heat in my chest.
My eyes drifted back to my phone.
I picked it up again and called him. No answer.
I stared at the screen, with my lips trembling slightly, then typed out a message.
"Hi, I don't know what I did to make you angry or annoyed, but I feel like I have to know and apologize so that my mind can rest."
I sent it.
Sliding the phone into my pocket, I walked back into the living room just as the front door creaked open.
That had to be my dad. He always had the spare key.
He walked in, his expression was blank as always.
"Dad, welcome," I said
softly.
He gave me a nod and started heading toward his room but paused, turning to face me.
"Do you know your wedding has been rescheduled?"
"What!?"
Tbc….
