I hadn't slept properly in days. Each time I closed my eyes, all I could see was Kaelen's face, his green eyes holding mine before he'd walked away on that mission. The mission he might not return from.
Staring out the window of our quarters in Silverholm Palace, I watched dawn break over the mountains. Another day without news. Another day of this gnawing emptiness in my chest where our bond should be pulsing strong and vital.
"You need to rest, Seraphina," Lyra's voice came from behind me. "This isn't good for you or the baby."
I turned to find my sister holding out a mug of herbal tea. The concern in her eyes only made the knot in my throat tighter.
"I can't," I whispered, accepting the tea but setting it aside. "Every time I try to sleep, I feel like I'm abandoning him somehow. Like if I just stay awake, keep searching for him through our bond, I might find him."
