Cherreads

Chapter 44 - 487

With a surprise attack, the culprit almost effortlessly killed Hyota Nagase, a strong contender for the championship in the Teito Pro Wrestlers Group.

Although Hyota Nagase struggled fiercely before his death, he only managed to create a nearly ten-centimeter-long crack on the mask worn by the culprit.

Of course, such precise judgments couldn't be made based solely on the video. The mask had already been found in the restroom by Conan before Senichi and the others arrived.

In addition to the crack under the right eye, this piece of evidence was also stained with the blood of the deceased.

Senichi didn't completely disregard using his enhanced sense of smell to identify who had come into contact with the mask. However, the evidence had been thrown into the restroom earlier.

Although it was possible to spend some extra effort to pick up useful scents, Senichi had no intention of activating his enhanced sense of smell to solve the case.

After all, the foul odor was torture to his heightened sense of smell, and enduring prolonged exposure to amplified scents was akin to torture.

Moreover, this case wasn't particularly complex. Having watched the video, Senichi had already made some discoveries, and there was no need to subject himself to such torment.

It was better to solve the case as usual, not only to exercise his reasoning abilities but also to accumulate "experience" for his investigative skills.

In the video, as it continued to play, the culprit's reactions after killing Hyota Nagase appeared somewhat unusual.

The assailant took two steps backward while holding the knife and constantly scanned the surroundings, as if he was searching for something.

The culprit was not paying attention and bumped into the chair where Hyota Nagase had been sitting while retreating, and then fell to the ground.

Kogoro Mouri and Inspector Megure, who had only watched half of the video, were extremely excited to witness this scene. Unfortunately, the idea of glimpsing the culprit's face through the crack in the mask was ultimately defeated by reality.

When the perpetrator stood up, only the left side of his face was exposed. The mask on this side was intact, resulting in no useful information obtained.

Subsequently, the culprit left the room while covered in blood. According to the accounts of several young wrestlers, when they were in the restroom, they did see a man covered in blood with a scarf on his head enter.

However, unlike other places where the sight of blood would cause panic, this was the backstage of a wrestling match, and having blood on oneself after a match was quite normal.

The young individuals thought nothing of it and assumed the person had just finished a match. Once inside the restroom, the person could confidently leave without arousing suspicion after putting on a pre-prepared coat.

Furthermore, according to the preliminary findings by the forensic examiner, although the exact time couldn't be determined, the crime likely occurred during Captain Kiba's match.

This conclusion was drawn because three minutes after the culprit left, the video captured cheers indicating Kiba's victory.

After questioning Captain Kiba, who could be ruled out as a suspect, the time of the crime was established to be around 7:20 PM.

Under Captain Kiba's leadership and organization, four eligible wrestlers were brought to the crime scene.

The first suspect was named Iwao Ushigome, a rough and rugged middle-aged man with a bald head, a beard, and a prominent goatee.

According to his account, he was watching Captain Kiba's match at 7:20 PM. Captain Kiba is strict with them, hoping they can learn something from the matches. If they don't attend, they would be scolded harshly later by Captain Kiba.

He claimed to have watched the match alone and had no one to vouch for his presence.

Another individual, a young man named Hiroyuki Sakuma, had a similar situation to Iwao Ushigome. He was also watching Captain Kiba's match at the time of the incident, alone.

However, after Captain Kiba's match, he immediately went to inform wrestler Nagase about preparing for the upcoming match.

Conan could testify to Sakuma's story, but unfortunately, at the time of the incident, it couldn't serve as an alibi to clear his suspicion.

"Now it's your turn," Inspector Megure said as he looked at the two individuals who were wearing masks. "Please take off your masks. We need to ask you some questions."

"Inspector, he doesn't understand Japanese," Takagi chuckled. "This 'Wolf Face' is Italian, and communication is done through a translator."

"And the identity of the 'Wolf Face' is confidential. If it's revealed..." Sakuma interjected, attempting to divert attention.

"It's okay, Sakuma," the man with the wolf mask said as he untied the straps behind the mask with both hands and pulled it down. "This lady and the boy already know my identity."

As it turned out, after Kogoro Mouri participated in a variety show, he came to watch the match. Since Takaharu Ogami's girlfriend was a fan of Kogoro Mouri, he wanted to get an autograph for her.

The reason he revealed his identity as the "Wolf Face" was that he was afraid he wouldn't get the autograph if he approached as an ordinary person. Hence, he chose to disclose his identity first.

"But I never expected it to be you!"

Looking at the handsome face revealed under the mask, Takagi exclaimed in surprise, "Aren't you Takaharu Ogami! The one who is jokingly said to be handsome but weak in strength!!"

"Although it's embarrassing, the 'Wolf Face' is me," Takaharu Ogami scratched his head and smiled apologetically.

"How is that possible?!"

Takagi, like Doraemon, pulled out a newspaper from his pocket, pointing to a photo of him and the Wolf Face. "Today's newspaper has a picture of you with the Wolf Face!"

"Oh... that was actually Sakuma pretending to be me."

Takaharu Ogami pointed to Hiroyuki Sakuma beside him. "He often impersonates the 'Wolf Face' in front of the media to conceal my true identity outside."

"Ogami-san, I have a question," Senichi pointed to the wolf mask in the newspaper. "The mask you're wearing now seems different from the one in this newspaper."

"Ah, that one is a mask specifically for meals, it's thinner in material, and the opening around the mouth is larger, making it convenient for eating."

Takaharu Ogami explained with a smile. "You see, the content in that newspaper is also about my eating capacity, and the location is near the cafeteria."

"Is that so?" Senichi recalled the appearance of the culprit in the video and nodded thoughtfully.

"Now, it's only this gentleman left," Inspector Megure looked at the last masked wrestler, saying, "Please also remove your mask."

Seemingly noticing everyone's gaze on him, the man then slowly began to take off his mask, revealing a clearly foreign face.
