Soubu High, Staff Room.
Light Yagami walked in, carrying a thick stack of homework books.
"Yagami, you've worked hard," the subject teacher said with a smile, taking a sip of his goji berry and chrysanthemum tea from his thermos.
"No problem, teacher," Light Yagami's face showed a bright, cheerful smile. I'm a top-notch, diligent student in Japan; carrying homework is nothing.
"Ah, if only all students in the world were like you~" The teacher sighed, shaking his head, seemingly about to launch into another critique of the current state of the Japanese government.
"It's precisely because society lacks sufficient education that people like Kira are born!" The teacher said indignantly, turning to Light Yagami: "Yagami, I remember you usually watch Chiba TV, right?"
"Yes."
"You must know about the Araki Financial Company incident. That criminal Kira is a deformed species born from such a lack of education in society. If everyone practiced truth, goodness, and beauty, such a monster wouldn't exist."
You know Kira exists, and Kira is happy. You speak ill of Kira, and Kira is very unhappy.
It seems Kira's reputation is spreading quickly in the Chiba area.
Light Yagami said with a fake smile, "Teacher, may I ask your name?"
(TL: Damn, that's sociopathic behaviour right there.)
"Huh?" The teacher thought he had misheard.
Light Yagami, acting chummy with the teacher, stood by the desk and changed the subject: "Teacher, what's wrong with Hiratsuka-sensei today? She looks very angry."
"Oh, Hiratsuka-sensei," the subject teacher rubbed his slightly balding head. "I heard it's because she has a difficult student who wrote a terrible essay, which made her angry."
Light Yagami folded his arms, standing quietly, somewhat looking forward to the next development. Life needed seasoning, and Shizuka Hiratsuka always brought unexpected surprises to Light Yagami.
This angry expression is really rare.
Light Yagami was curious about what kind of brave soul could make Shizuka Hiratsuka so angry.
Soon, the protagonist of this story appeared.
The newcomer was a boy with an ahoge (antenna hair) and a pair of dead fish eyes. Seeing him timidly walk into the staff room, Light Yagami immediately pinpointed him. Sure enough, upon seeing that boy, Shizuka Hiratsuka's anger level immediately soared.
"Hikigaya! Read your essay aloud to me!"
Shizuka Hiratsuka slammed the absurd essay onto the desk and glared furiously at the boy named Hikigaya.
Hikigaya took the essay, swallowed stiffly, and read it aloud to the public. His voice wasn't loud, but with Light Yagami's hearing, he managed to catch every word.
"Youth is a lie, a sin. People who praise youth are fools... Fools who enjoy youth, just to explode in an spectacular burst of disillusionment..."
Just explode...
Even with Light Yagami's watching the show mentality, his gaze towards Hikigaya became somewhat strange. How did this guy manage to write such a... fresh and unconventional essay under Shizuka Hiratsuka's nose?
Also, he seems to be scolding me?
"With the theme of reminiscing about youth, how could you write such a foolish essay? Honestly... your eyes are just like dead fish eyes!"
Shizuka Hiratsuka relentlessly criticized Hikigaya: "You brat, how could you..."
"Brat? Although given your age, sensei, I really..."
Boom!
A powerful straight punch swept towards Hikigaya's cheek. The force generated even made Light Yagami, standing at the very back, feel a faint stinging sensation on his face.
"Has no one ever taught you not to talk about a woman's age?"
Light Yagami took it to heart, nodding in agreement.
Just like him, he never discussed a woman's age. For example, Ryougi Shiki, or Makima; their ages remain unknown to readers to this day.
(Fourth wall breaking)
"This is terrible," Shizuka Hiratsuka shook her head, looking somewhat disappointed. "A personality like yours absolutely needs to be corrected. You need a friend, a role model..."
"Coincidentally, I know someone..."
Terrifying.
Time to escape.
Light Yagami, who vaguely guessed what Shizuka Hiratsuka was about to say, tried to slip away from the staff room.
Unexpectedly, the sharp-eyed Shizuka Hiratsuka caught him instantly, saying with a hint of surprise, "Oh? Yagami, why are you here? I just happened to need you for something."
"Come over."
Light Yagami forcibly stopped himself, reluctantly turned around, and walked over.
I shouldn't have come to gossip.
Light Yagami feigned an innocent expression and asked, "Hiratsuka-sensei, were you looking for me?"
"Yes. Yagami, I have a new request for you."
"I want to ask you to be friends with this guy!"
Shizuka Hiratsuka raised her hand and clapped it heavily on Light Yagami's shoulder.
Upon hearing this, Hachiman Hikigaya surveyed the tall, handsome boy emanating a normie aura before him.
Be friends with this guy?! No, no, don't...
Hachiman Hikigaya stiffened, facing Light Yagami's somewhat scrutinizing gaze, nearly wanting to flee. What kind of torture was this?! Why was he, an invisible person, being targeted by such a school Brahmin? He was suffocating...
He knew Light Yagami.
The top student in his grade, known in student circles big and small as the man at the pinnacle of Soubu High. Snow Yukinoshita, the ice queen, was his counterpart.
To be fair, being friends with someone like him shouldn't be too bad.
Hikigaya recalled the conversations he'd overheard from Miura and her friends about Light Yagami while pretending to sleep with his head on his arms; he was said to be an easygoing guy. Unlike the ice queen, Light Yagami was approachable and seemed able to have friendly conversations with anyone.
If he takes the initiative... maybe I should just agree. Otherwise, Hiratsuka-sensei will definitely keep nagging me about my problems. Hachiman Hikigaya immediately made his decision.
Who would have thought—
"I'm sorry, Hiratsuka-sensei. If becoming friends is a request, I might not be able to accept it." Light Yagami displayed a gentle smile. "So-called friends are like-minded and understanding individuals. If my memory serves me right, today is the first time I've met Hikigaya-kun."
Is this some new opening line for rejection? Hikigaya secretly thought it was bad.
"However, I don't have any ill feelings towards Hikigaya-kun. If he needs anything, he can come to the club room to find me later. Perhaps after we try interacting, we'll find each other interesting and become friends."
Light Yagami smiled, pulled out a blank piece of paper, wrote down the club's address, and handed it over.
