Chapter 15 - The Flame That Burns in Shadows

The skies above the Temple of Echoes had turned a pale amber as the sun dipped behind the horizon. A breeze rolled through the valley, rustling the tall golden grass around the small encampment where the Guardians had decided to rest. After the clash with the shadow beasts and the discovery of Vaerion, the dragon companion of Aizak Mikami, tensions had simmered into a strange but comforting calm.

Akane Aika sat cross-legged near the campfire, twirling the wind around her fingers like ribbons of silk. Fumiko Haruki leaned against a boulder, sparks flicking from her fingertips as she toyed with a flame. Chouka Daiki and Hitomi Ika were finishing the repair of their worn weapons, while Suzume Tamami and Tomomi Usagi quietly shared glances, their bond growing deeper through the journey. Aizak, meanwhile, stood beside Vaerion, his dark cloak fluttering in the wind, his fingers resting on the scales of the towering dragon.

Despite the peace, an uneasiness lingered.

"We're being followed," Tomomi said suddenly, her dark magic pulsing softly. "Since the canyon."

Suzume nodded, eyes closed. "I felt it too. A presence, distant but steady."

Vaerion growled low. "You are not wrong. Something ancient treads behind you."

Aizak stepped forward. "Then let it come. Whatever it is, we face it together."

The group turned their eyes to the western ridge. Distant footsteps echoed across the stones.

From the shadows emerged a cloaked figure — tall, hooded, and limping slightly. As the group stood at the ready, the figure fell to their knees.

"Help... please... they're coming... the hunters..."

Fumiko rushed forward, ignoring the warnings of the others. "Who are 'they'?" she asked.

The stranger looked up, revealing a face half-scarred by fire, half-glowing with an unnatural purple hue. "The Obsidian Order... they've awakened the Chimera of Ruin."

The group exchanged looks of shock. The Chimera of Ruin was not just a legend. It was a catastrophic being born from fused elemental cores — a creature capable of unraveling reality itself.

Chouka stepped forward. "Where?"

"In the Hollow Vale," the stranger rasped. "South of the Temple of Echoes. They mean to feed it... with the Heart of Ether."

Suzume gasped. "The Heart of Ether is protected by the Pillar Seals. They'd need all seven elemental keys."

Aizak nodded grimly. "And we've seen them collecting them."

Vaerion growled again, his wings flexing. "Then we must not wait. We fly now."

The Guardians prepared in haste, gathering their relics and tightening armor. Aizak offered his hand to the stranger.

"What is your name?"

"I'm Kairo. I was once a Guardian... before they corrupted me."

Akane looked into his eyes. "You're one of us now. If you fight with us, we protect you."

Kairo nodded, trembling. "Thank you... but beware — the Chimera cannot be fought with magic alone."

Vaerion roared as the party mounted. Flames flared and light shone as the dragon took to the skies, the wind carrying them toward the south.

---

The Hollow Vale was an ancient scar across the land, a cursed wound left after the Elemental War. As they landed near its edge, the air grew cold. No stars twinkled above. Magic felt sluggish, like swimming through tar.

The entrance to the inner vale was a gate formed of bones and obsidian. Shadows pulsed behind it.

"They're here," Tomomi whispered. "I feel the keys... all of them."

Inside, cloaked figures chanted around a black altar. At its center — a creature still forming. Horned, winged, wreathed in swirling elemental energy, the Chimera of Ruin's eyes blinked open — one red, one gold.

Fumiko charged first, unleashing a barrage of fire. It did nothing.

Chouka summoned stone spikes, Hitomi doused the altar in icy torrents, Akane called a tempest — all to no avail.

Aizak ran forward, touching the edge of the altar, channeling his healing magic not into the creature — but the ground. "This land remembers peace," he whispered. "Let that memory rise."

A brilliant green glow surged from his hands. The shadows recoiled. The Chimera howled.

Vaerion slammed into it with divine fury, biting its neck and pulling it away from the keys.

Kairo stepped up beside Aizak. "Use my power. My soul still remembers what it meant to protect."

Together, they summoned a wave of light and darkness fused — a beam that struck the Chimera's chest, cracking the elemental core inside.

Tomomi raised her staff. "Now!"

All six mages joined hands and poured their elemental energy into Aizak, who focused it like a prism.

With a cry, he released the spell.

The Chimera shattered — its energy dissipating into the wind.

Silence fell.

Then the altar crumbled.

The Obsidian Order fled into shadow.

And Kairo collapsed.

---

They buried Kairo beneath a silver tree in the vale, a symbol of redemption and unity.

"He died a Guardian," Suzume whispered.

Vaerion nodded solemnly. "As will we all. But only after we stop what comes next."

Because this was not the end. This was only the first wave.

The true war had begun.
