Chapter 18 - The Nature of Mana

Logan scowled as he heard her, 'What does this mean for me?' He subconsciously played with his white hair.

"Think of it this way." Miss Beth tapped the crystal and the image of the planet vanished, getting replaced with a triangular glass prism.

"When light goes through a prism of this nature, it splits into seven constituent colors." A hologram of a beam of light went through the prism and from the other side emerged seven colors; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

"Something similar occurs with our life force and world energy." Her hand tapped the crystal again and the image changed.

This time, a cyan sphere of energy was displayed for all students present to see.

"This is a representation of the human life force. Now watch what happens." A multicolored beam of energy representing world energy entered the sphere.

The sphere turned heavily ethereal to let the students see what was happening.

The multicolored beam split into six colors; Red, Blue, Yellow, Brown, Silver and Black.

The students still appeared confused.

The split colors passed through the other end but the color red remained bouncing around in the sphere before it left with the other colors.

"As you can see, red stayed in the life force." She stated what was visible to all students around.

"In a real person, that person would have red streaks." She revealed to the students.

"This dispersion and refraction of the world energy is responsible for your streaks." She finalized as the students gasped and started discussing amongst themselves.

'Wait, if the streaks is as a result of dispersion of world energy in the life force, then EVERYONE should have streaks. What the hell happened to me?' Logan's mind raced as he pondered his situation.

'Could it be a lack of life force? No, I'd be dead. No world energy? No, I wouldn't be able to cast spells. What is going on?' He raised and eliminated hypotheses in seconds, his eyebrows were deeply furrowed as he immersed himself in his thoughts.

He looked at Miss Beth and much to his surprise, or rather otherwise, Miss Beth was studying him, her eyes squinted.

"Anyway." She glanced at Logan one more time before focusing on the class.

"That's it for streaks. It's time I use what I just told you to explain mana." She reached for the crystal when she noticed a raised hand. It was the same girl from earlier.

"If that's true, what about those with the orange streaks of lightning magic or those with mind or even metal magic?" She challenged Miss Beth.

"Perfect. I was waiting for someone to ask that." Miss Beth revealed before facing the door.

"Come in." The door opened and two students walked in.

They wore similar tracksuits but theirs had two silver linings running across the sides. They were second years.

The two boys walked in calmly with their hands in their pockets.

One was blonde with red streaks and the other had black hair with yellow streaks.

"You are of the impression that lightning is lightning just like earth is earth but lightning occurs during a thunderstorm." Miss Beth inhaled sharply and gave a pause.

"During thunderstorms, lightning is produced as a result of some electric charges in the air." Miss Beth started her explanation.

"So you see, AIR is what has the charge that creates lightning. Like so." She gestured to the student with the yellow streak.

His hand formed quick and erratic signs as he mumbled.

The students present felt their hair stand on end as they watched him cast his spell.

He extended his hand and bright yellow lightning spread out in all directions, flowing freely through the air.

Some bolts struck his hand and the students watched as his hand burned before he stopped the spell.

"Go to the hospital." She waved a dismissive hand at the boy who hurriedly left.

"We all know that our spells can not hurt us not only because it has our mana but because of our life force within it." Her voice ceased as she took a pause.

"But poor Kevin's hand got burned because the lightning was an effect of the spell as opposed to the actual spell." She explained before gesturing to the other boy.

He just like the first cast a spell and the students watched as a thick blue lightning bolt flew from his hand and struck the floor with a bang.

The floor now featured a hole that released smoke.

The boy bowed at Miss Beth apologetically before leaving the class.

"Fire, believe it or not, is plasma and do you know what else is plasma? Lightning. An average fire mage can twist the nature of his flame to turn it into such." She continued her class treating the gaping hole as though it didn't exist.

"Normally the way multiple streaks work is that numerous elemental energies totally internally reflect in the life force but in the case of lightning, only fire and air does but they end up coinciding forcing them to find a midpoint." Miss Beth waved her hand to place attention at her palm.

"The red color of fire and the yellow color of air find their common midpoint in the orange color of lightning." She concluded as orange sparks danced around her palm.

"And as for metal, think of it as extra sensitive affinity for earth but that'll be covered in another class." She smiled softly at the girl, the latter wishing the ground would open up to swallow her.

"Back to the main focus." She called to the students, gesturing for the still standing girl to sit.

"Ignoring the refraction of one or more of the elemental energies in the life force, the energies when they leave take with them a bit of your life force." She leaned against her table.

"Your body naturally fights against your life force being taken and so what does it do? It compresses the world energy into a sphere in your body. Sounds familiar? Yes, that is your mana core." She revealed much to everyone's shock.

"That's the way it has been with the mana core and streaks." She resumed after which she took a short pause.

"Or rather the way it should have been it not for the abnormality." Her soft smile faded as she pointed her finger at someone in the tenth row.

Her finger was pointing at Logan.
