After learning the basics that day, Mordred moved to do something more exciting.
Sofia brought him to the top of the tower.
At the very top, it was mostly an open space, with just one small building that served as an entrance. It had a 1.5 meter tall stone wall all around; and there was no roof.
That's where Mordred could apparently freely cast his Magic.
Because he had begun with Water Ball, he was first taught the other Elementary-ranked Water spells, casting them for the first time under Sofia's eye.
In total, he grasped five of them: Water Ball, Water Arrow, Ice Blade, Ice Smash and Water Shield.
Although they were all Elementary-ranked, different spells used up different amounts of Magic Power.
These were all Elementary ranked, but Mordred felt that nearly all these spells could instantly kill a normal person if used against them.
However, Sofia didn't seem to care about it and only marveled at the quantity of Mordred's Magic Power to allow him to cast all of those without getting tired.
After Water Magic came the Earth spells, then Wind spells and then finally Fire spells.
Teaching a 2-year-old child how to use Fire Magic was certainly not a wise idea, but Sofia seemed determined to test Mordred's limits.
In truth, the elderly Magician expected Mordred to faint out of exhaustion soon enough. Or perhaps there are types of Magic that he's worse at, like Fire magic because he burned himself accidentally in the past, which is quite common…
But in the end, she was dumbfounded to see that Mordred had gone through all of the Elementary ranked spells of Attack Magic in existence and was still not out of Magic Power!
This totally stumped Sofia.
Was this kid really someone who had just begun learning Magic?
But she knew well that Mordred was only 2 years old, so how could he have learned it before!
With his ungodly amount of Magic Power, Mordred might truly be the first person to master Emperor ranked Magic in hundreds of years!
As for God-rank, Sofia did not dare to think about it.
'Is he a Miko?' The Court Magician thought.
If Mordred was a Blessed Child, blessed with superior intellect and outrageous Magic Power reserves from birth, then things would make perfect sense. In fact, it was the only explanation!
At that point, Sofia was even more interested in testing Mordred's limits, so they went downstairs, where she moved on to attempt teaching her new disciple Healing and Detoxification Magic. To that end, she even didn't hesitate and cut her arm and also drank some alcohol to oversee Mordred's performance carefully.
Although this was only the Elementary rank, the difficulty of casting those spells would still be at least 50% higher.
Healing Magic is a difficult field. It is not an exaggeration to say that compared to Attack Magic, it is twice as difficult to master. A talented Magician might reach Advanced rank in one of the four Attack types, but would most often be stuck at the Intermediate rank when it came to his Healing Magic, and that already was an accomplishment.
But for Healing Magic and Detoxification Magic, Mordred had also managed to learn those!
Sofia stopped at this point. She said, "Good! Today you've managed to cast all Elementary ranked spells of the main Magic types! It looks like teaching you has some merit!"
Mordred faintly smiled. "Thank you, Master."
"We went through a lot today. Go back and digest what you've learned."
"Yes."
"Em… Actually, why won't you just move into my tower?" The old woman added at the end as she realized that it would be difficult to monitor Mordred and the effects of his Magic if he was not nearby.
Mordred heard this and raised his eyebrows. "... I think it's a good idea."
"Good," the old woman said calmly, before shouting out. "Samuel!!!"
A few short seconds later, the door burst open as the butler from before entered the room with a completely tranquil expression. "I'm here, Grandmaster."
Sofia looked at Mordred, saying, "Bring him back to his place. Help him pack and then arrange a room for him in the tower."
"Understood. This subordinate will do exactly that," the butler said while sending Mordred a surprised look; it seemed the Grandmaster had taken a liking to this boy.
…
Mordred followed the butler back to his old room, but when he got there, he saw an unfamiliar person waiting at the door.
Looking at the man's attire, he was also a servant deployed by the royal family.
Mordred wondered why another servant would have come here.
Seeing Mordred and Samuel, the man smiled and approached them. He casually bowed in a greeting toward the butler, saying, "Mr. Samuel… And is this the 16th Prince?"
"Yes, he is the 16th Prince," Samuel replied in a neutral tone.
At this, the servant smiled in a friendly manner, bowed down low and made a completely noble greeting directed at Mordred, then said, "Your Highness… My Lord, the 1st Prince, had heard of your outstanding talent at Magic. He thinks well of your future and has sent you a gift."
'Hm?' Mordred was surprised.
A gift? He didn't expect that he would be pulled into the political spiral so soon! Without a doubt, after his talent was revealed, this 1st Prince wanted to curry favor with him.
After the introduction, the servant pulled out an oblong black wooden box with golden decorations from his chest pocket.
Bowing down, the man presented the box to Mordred as if it was a treasure, then opened it and explained, "Your Highness, the item inside the box is a magic quill that never runs out of ink. It is a very rare and highly practical Magic Item. It is not a Magic Tool, but a rare Magic Item. The 1st Prince wishes you good luck with your studies!"
Mordred heard this and raised his eyebrows again.
In this world one needs to use quills to write, there are no pens. This meant that every few letters one had to pull away the quill from the paper, dip it in an ink stone at the side, then finally return to writing, all while being extremely careful to not make a mess.
In this kind of world, a self-filling quill was simply a luxury item! It was a treasure.
In regard to this gift, Mordred would naturally not refuse it.
"Oh. That sounds very useful…" Mordred replied.
The servant smiled as if he didn't think the kid understood what he just said anyway. He said, "You might not understand the value of it now, but you will eventually. Your Highness, this is for you."
"Yes, thank you." Mordred received the wooden box from the servant's hands.
After the man left, Mordred looked down at the quill he just got with satisfaction.
This gift was very timely!
Because of how bothersome it was, he had not made much progress in his calligraphy while learning how to read the language of this world. He didn't practice his writing skills. But now writing down anything will be far more convenient.
…
It was decided that Charlotte, as my caretaker and nursing mother, would move into the Court Magician's tower as well.
After settling down in the tower, for the rest of the day Mordred practiced his truncated and silent casting while reading the Magic Guidebook; because he now lived in the Court Magician's tower and already knew all kinds of spells, he managed to convince Sofia to allow him to keep one.
Next day, he had Magic lessons again.
"Boy! This is for you!" Sofia said as she gave Mordred a 40 cm long wooden wand with a white-blue medium-sized diamond-like gemstone on top.
'Hm… A wand...' Mordred received the wand with a curious expression.
Sofia explained, "When a student manages to cast his first Magic, it's a custom for the Master to gift him with his first wand, officially acknowledging him as a Magician. I made this wand yesterday using a B-rank Magic Stone I had lying around. It should be good enough for you for now."
'A B-rank gemstone?' Mordred looked at her again. His teacher spoke of it casually as if it was a piece of trash, but wasn't this wand just a single rank below Rudeus's A-rank staff?
"What are you doing? Bow down and say thank you!"
"Yes, Master. Thank you!"
