Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 Valerius

The silent pact between Elara and Lyra, solidified by a touch in the library, hummed beneath Elara's skin like a newly awakened magical current. Lyra's words, "You are not alone, Elara Vance," had resonated deep within her, a terrifying comfort she hadn't realized she craved. It was a perilous alliance, a forbidden connection that could shatter her mission, yet it offered a glimpse of solace in her solitary quest.

Elara channeled this new, unsettling energy into her research. With Lyra's cryptic hints about the Valerius family's involvement in arcane arts, Elara shifted her focus in the academy library. She delved into obscure histories of Eldoria's magical guilds, records of old political maneuvers, and even less-traveled sections on forbidden magical practices from centuries past.

What she unearthed about the Valerius family was far more insidious than simple political ambition. The Valerius name, publicly lauded for its martial prowess and loyalty to the crown, had a hidden shadow. Centuries ago, a powerful branch of the family had been deeply involved in a practice known as Soul-Binding, a forbidden and dark form of magic that allowed practitioners to subtly control or manipulate the wills of others, often through potent, mind-altering enchantments. While officially outlawed and condemned by the kingdom, whispers of its clandestine use by certain "traditionalist" factions persisted in academic circles.

The documents Elara found hinted at a pivotal moment: a generation before her own, the Valerius family had seemingly abandoned Soul-Binding, publicly distancing themselves from the dark art. But Elara discovered coded ledgers, hidden within official records, detailing vast sums of wealth and resources suddenly acquired by the Valerius patriarchs during that very period. This wealth correlated precisely with the "purification of magical lineages" Lyra had mentioned – a euphemism, Elara now realized, for the systemic weakening and dismantling of rival magical houses, including her own Vance lineage, who primarily practiced Life Magic. The Vances, with their deep connection to natural life force and innate resistance to external magical manipulation, would have been a significant obstacle to Soul-Binding influence.

The implication was horrifying: her family wasn't just removed for political gain; they were eliminated because their inherent magic made them a natural counter to the Valerius family's dark practices. The conspiracy ran deeper than she could have imagined, rooted in centuries of hidden ambition and the insidious use of forbidden magic.

Her blood boiled with fresh fury. This wasn't just revenge; it was about exposing a rot that threatened the very fabric of Eldoria.

The following morning, Elara conducted her Life Magic field class in the academy's vast, secluded arboretum. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and blooming life. Students were tasked with nurturing a specific rare plant, monitoring its growth, and coaxing it with their nascent magical energies.

Cassian Valerius, predictably, was doing little. He stood with two of his cronies, whispering and snickering, completely ignoring the delicate, shimmering fronds of the 'Moonpetal Willow' assigned to him. Elara had her back to them, assisting a quiet, earnest student named Faelan, whose plant was struggling.

Suddenly, a loud splash echoed through the serene arboretum, followed by a choked gasp. Elara whirled around. Cassian and his friends were laughing as Faelan stood drenched, his face pale and dripping, a bucket of stagnant water from a nearby pond having been emptied over him. The Moonpetal Willow, a plant known for its sensitivity to foreign substances, was visibly shrinking, its luminescence dimming.

"Oops, clumsy, aren't we, Faelan?" Cassian sneered, flicking water from his own hand. "Perhaps Life Magic isn't for those who can't even stand still." His friends snickered.

Faelan's eyes welled up, and he looked around hopelessly. No other students dared to intervene.
