Chapter 43 - A Womb is Not A Crown

I had slept for three days straight.

When I finally woke, the first thing I did was tell Leila to bring me a bowl of contraceptive tea.

It might've been too late by now, but it was better to overreact than underprepare.

Then came the silent repentance. For losing control. For giving in to lust. Yes, the drug was potent. Yes, I was out of my mind. But still, I couldn't fully forgive myself for letting things spiral so far.

I drank the bitter liquid in one long swallow and returned the empty bowl to Leila's tray.

She didn't move. Her eyes were wide and uneasy, shifting from the bowl to my face, looking for something, maybe an explanation, or maybe just a sign that I was still me.

Fair enough. I'd vanished for two days, returned in nothing but Dylan's cloak, then slept like the dead for three more. I hadn't even dared to look in the mirror yet. I didn't want to scare myself with whatever ghost was staring back.
