It has been a few days since that faithful evening, and Elien could not help but fall in love with Varan even more than she already has. He would often long before her in the mornings, but he would still stay in bed and hug her sleeping figure until she woke up.
Although Varan did not talk much, he would show his growing affection for her with his actions, always being around her, listening to her whenever she spoke, and getting her the things that she liked when she didn't get them herself.
"Varan." Elien said from her position in his arms, it was still morning, but they had been lying in bed for a few hours, just embracing each other. "Do you think that I could become somebody to love?" Elien asked as she traced the faint scars on his hand.
Varan was quiet for moment, just long enough for Elien to be worried, "I already see you as that person, Elien." Varans words hung in air for a moment. Elien's cheeks flushed a deep shade of red as she buried her head into his chest. "Even though we have only known each other for a few days?" Elien asked once more.
Varan just placed his hand on the top of her head, this action was his answer, and at this Elien just smiled as she removed her head from his chest and looked at Varan. His face was calm, but she could see the faint redness of his cheeks as he looked into her eyes.
.
Elien was walking through Whitruns market with Varan, both of them were wearing simple clothes, and even he was much taller than she was, she had her arm wrapped around his as she led him through the extensive market. "What should we get for dinner?" Elien asked as she was looking through the various produce.
"I do not mind love, as long as it's something you make, I will eat it." Varan said as he looked around the market, watching as the people around them kept stealing glances at him and Elien, something he did not appreciate. "Ignore them, Varan." Elien said calming as she was picking out a piece of meat.
"Alright love." Varan replied as he looked at the large piece of venison Elien was trying to hold before taking it from her and holding it in his off hand. Elien smiled up at him before paying for the venison and dragging Varan away from the market and to their shared home.
.
It was late in the evening, but Varan was still awake as he was sitting on the bed. Next to him Elien was sleeping peacefully, something that has avoided him that night. Despite the peace he has been experiencing over the past couple days, the memories of that day still plague his mind.
The memories of that day have caused unrest in his soul, "Do I deserve this love?' Varan thought to himself as images of Valor's and Syrran's lifeless bodies filled his mind. 'Why do I get to live... yet they do not?' Varan now held his head in his hands, as if trying to smother these thoughts and memories.
When he failed to do so, he rose from the bed, careful not to wake up Elien. He equipped his armour, looking over his shoulder every now and then to make sure that she was still asleep, once he was done, he strapped his greatsword to his back and his dagger to his waist.
Grabbing a paper and quill, he wrote a short letter to Elien before walking out the front door and into the cold winter night.
