Chapter 87 - Episode 86: Shadows Hidden in the Dark

Having received 2B call for help, that's why he arrived so quickly.

In fact, it was precisely because Coulson brought a group of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who suddenly joined the battle that the fight ended so quickly.

'No wonder they retreated so decisively...'

He hadn't noticed before but thinking back carefully now, Coulson suddenly discovered several suspicious points in the process that he had missed.

He couldn't just watch the show anymore.

With his mind racing, Coulson had already abandoned his plan of 'waiting for the police chief to interrogate a bit more until Shi Xiaolei couldn't bear the pressure, then stepping out to solve his troubles and earn an extra favor.'

Taking a step forward and looking at George Stacy, Coulson displayed the bearing of an elite agent, suddenly transforming from a harmless nice guy into an imposing 'big shot': "Sorry, Chief Stacy, the situation has changed. From now on, S.H.I.E.L.D. is taking over this case."

"Huh?"

Stunned for a moment, George Stacy protested: "I object. Such a serious gunfight occurred in my jurisdiction and as police chief, I must investigate the matter thoroughly to give the people living here an explanation."

"I can understand your thinking, but I'm sorry—the inside story of this matter may be far deeper than you imagine. So, to ensure nothing goes wrong, we can only take over."

Coulson smiled apologetically and pointed to the landline phone on the desk: "If nothing unexpected happens, you should receive instructions from your superiors very soon."

As soon as he finished speaking, the landline rang.

With a sour expression he picked up the receiver, reluctantly listened to his superior instructions then angrily hung up the phone.

Looking up, George Stacy first stared hard at Coulson for a while then suddenly deflated: "You can take him, but I have one condition."

"Please go ahead."

"When you have results, let me know."

After a pause, George Stacy firmly added: "As police chief, I must be responsible for my officers below. Without knowing the inside story, there's no way to handle the next emergency situation. I don't want to send my officers to their deaths then have to go to their homes and face their wives and children with that damn death notification."

"This..."

"Listen, I'm not negotiating with you. If you want me to make concessions this is a necessary condition."

Seeing Stacy firm stance, Coulson could only nod with a bitter smile: "Alright, I agree. But I need to say something upfront... you know about confidentiality rules, I can't guarantee I'll tell you everything."

"Tell me as much as you can."

Staring into Coulson eyes, Stacy extended his right hand: "Deal?"

"Deal."

The conversation between the two agencies wasn't suitable for interference.

After Coulson and George Stacy reached an agreement and the group left the chief office to board the Quinjet on the rooftop, Stark finally asked the question that had been bothering him for a while: "Coulson, what's the deal with Agent 47?"

As soon as these words came out they immediately drew the attention of Shi Xiaolei, Coulson, and May.

First giving Shi Xiaolei a 'don't worry' look, then raising his hand to tap his helmet: "A high-tech product worth billions with built-in surveillance capability—that's pretty normal, isn't it?"

Only then did they realize that the intelligence they had just received had been intercepted by Stark.

Having worked as an agent for so many years yet stumbling in such a situation, May felt somewhat annoyed and couldn't help but shoot Stark an indignant glare.

"Sorry, this is our internal classified information."

Coulson shook his head, showing no intention of providing an answer.

"Ha, are you sure?"

Stark raised an eyebrow and found himself a chair to sit down, crossing his legs.

Because he was still wearing armor, his crossed legs made a crisp metallic clinking sound.

Not only was his posture arrogant, but Stark words were equally arrogant: "Don't mention the word 'classified' in front of me, OK? You know that with my capabilities, I can hack into your servers in minutes. So, if you don't want me to know more secrets, you'd better answer my questions directly. I save some trouble, you feel at ease—everyone wins. What do you think?"

Having not yet experienced a 'beating' he didn't believe Stark could break through S.H.I.E.L.D. firewall.

However as a veteran agent, Coulson had already ingrained caution into his bones.

Better safe than sorry.

After hesitating for a moment, Coulson made his decision: "Alright, the matter of Agent 47 goes back to an operation three years ago..."

Silently listening to Coulson story, after a few minutes he finished hearing the intelligence about Agent 47.

"Let me sort this out."

Instinctively wanting to reach for a cup, he stretched out his hand only to remember this wasn't his private jet.

To cover his embarrassment, Stark immediately changed his gesture, placing his hand on his chin: "Because of the medicine Rock brought out, the military got greedy. When they implemented the capture operation against Rock another group suddenly jumped out wanting to intercept and steal Rock who was controlled by the military. Combined with what you just said... that means this group not only has traitors who faked their deaths and defected from S.H.I.E.L.D., but also moles hidden within the military. Hiss!"

If they had only infiltrated the military or only planted agents within S.H.I.E.L.D., one could still speculate that this hidden organization was simply an enemy force targeting only the military or S.H.I.E.L.D.

But having arranged spies in both forces made the severity of the situation completely different.

This meant that the organization hiding in the shadows must be extremely large, with tentacles that had definitely penetrated various fields.

Its scale was at least national-level to start with, possibly even a world-class organization.

What kind of organization could possess such great power while remaining so deeply hidden?

Coulson who worked for S.H.I.E.L.D., couldn't think of it.

Stark who had Jarvis and could be like an encyclopedia if he wanted, also couldn't figure it out.

On the contrary, Shi Xiaolei who hadn't spoken much was clear as a mirror in his heart.

'Who else could it be but Hydra.'

Pursing his lips, while complaining inwardly, Shi Xiaolei unconsciously showed a depressed expression.

Despite all his dodging and hiding, he still ended up being targeted by Hydra.

Moreover, it was together with the equally difficult military that they had set their sights on him, this coveted prize.

What should he do?

'Maybe I should just leave America and go back home.'

The more he thought about it, the more his head ached and Shi Xiaolei even subconsciously had such thoughts.

Well, it was just a thought.

After a moment, Shi Xiaolei dismissed the idea of taking his family and leaving America to return to his homeland.

First, because the identity documents he had paid to obtain in America might not work in his homeland, which had a stricter household registration system.

Second, as he continued to 'open boxes' more and more companions would gather around him.

The obedient 2B and Kanna weren't a concern.

Sister Bay was also fine—although she was somewhat unconventional, she was still within the range that ordinary people could accept.

But no one could guarantee that the next companion summoned would definitely be like those few.

What if someone came who couldn't be accepted by normal people or someone naturally rebellious who liked to cause trouble?

Just in case, it was better not to go back and stay here. (T/N: Jesus chill rock, rock was about to sing absurd nationalism! But not on my watch)

After all, the america in marvel already had a habit of courting disaster so even if there were more chaotic situations in their lives, the difference wouldn't be that significant.
