The footsteps quickened behind us, accompanied by the scrape of metal against brick.
"Hey! Don't ignore us, ladies!" One of them called out, his voice slurred with alcohol. "We just want to have some fun."
I risked a glance over my shoulder and immediately regretted it. Three men were following us, their faces twisted with predatory grins. The one in front was tall and lanky, wearing a stained hoodie. The other three flanked him, one stocky with a baseball cap pulled low, the other thin with greasy hair hanging in his face.
Maya's grip on my hand tightened. "Keep walking," she whispered again, calm but alert.
But they didn't back off. One grabbed Maya's arm. "Why you walking so fast, baby? We just wanna talk."
Maya didn't hesitate. Her fist connected with his face so fast I barely saw it happen. He stumbled back, clutching his nose, cursing.
