Chapter 310: Sneak Attack
After the initial chaos, the Sand Village ninjas began to dispatch personnel to control the "madmen" while organizing forces to attack the Four-Tails in teams. It was only at this point that Gaara realized he should act. He manipulated the flowing sand to gather and help the ninjas defend against the falling lava.
"Where is the Barrier Squad? Hurry up, seal this big guy, ah!"
"No, there are still enemies in the shadows!"
"Someone is sneak-attacking us!"
The Konoha ninjas who knew Earth Release ninjutsu all made their move.
Ino watched as Kakashi, wearing a black hood and a single-sleeved Iwagakure vest, used a "Earth Release: Rock Lodging Destruction" to crush two Sand Village ninjas to death.
At the entrance of the Sand Village, other Konoha ninjas summoned Orochimaru's giant snakes, then let them wreak havoc on the streets and buildings along the way.
The Konoha ninjas, wearing Stone Village vests, caused trouble everywhere. They fought guerrilla style, hitting and running.
They'd start a fire here, throw an Earth Release ninjutsu there.
Asuma had come to carry out the mission wearing a mask.
As soon as he arrived in the Sand Village, he remembered the Third Hokage who had died in the Konoha Crush.
It was true that father and son had ideological differences, but he was still his father. If you were to pick ten Konoha ninjas who most wanted to retaliate against the Sand Village, he would definitely be one of them.
At this moment, he showed no courtesy at all, directly summoning the special exploding tags he had accumulated over this period and throwing a rain of them at several of the Sand Village's radical high-ranking officials.
"Mutual Multiplying Explosive Tags!"
A chain of explosions engulfed three of the Sand Village's Jounin, followed by a series of intense explosions.
The entire village was shrouded in firelight.
Ino and Tsunade packed up their things and quietly headed out of the village. As they walked, they saw a figure lingering on the outskirts of the battle. She ran over and grabbed Miss Maki.
Her eyes were full of hesitation, as if she wanted to help but was still uncertain.
Ino said, word for word, "Miss Maki, run away quickly. Why get involved? As a bystander, I feel it's not worth it for you. Think about your teacher."
Miss Maki's weapon was chakra cloth. Ino had spent a lot of effort on her, not only because she was a Jounin but also because she valued her sealing jutsu.
Her "Cloth Binding Technique" wasn't at the level of directly sealing a Tailed Beast, but if she acted as the main sealer, coordinating with the sealing squad and many other ninjas, there was a certain chance of sealing the Four-Tails.
After all, the Four-Tails was not the Nine-Tails; in the Tailed Beast group, its combat power was not too strong.
Suppression, sealing—these tasks were certainly achievable for a hidden village if they paid a certain price.
Ino's words were full of bewitchment.
Miss Maki looked at the Sand Village engulfed in flames, remembered her teacher who had died tragically in a foreign land, and a sense of satisfaction welled up in her heart.
To have her directly defect from the village was certainly not possible, but to slack off at this time, find an unnoticed place to hide—that was no problem.
The Sand Village was not Konoha. Its talent had withered, and the ninjas skilled in sealing jutsu were few and far between. Usually, they barely managed with each person filling a specific role. Now, with one main sealer missing, the entire sealing operation instantly stagnated. No one wanted to face the Four-Tails directly and act as the main sealer. What if they got too carried away and were killed by a punch from the Four-Tails? What a loss that would be.
Jiraiya couldn't allow Orochimaru to leave his sight, so he could only bring this "pendant" along with him. First, he secretly rendezvoused with Tsunade and Ino, then Kakashi also found them. The five of them quietly left the main group and headed for the small oasis north of the village to capture Chiyo.
Ten minutes after the fires erupted in the Sand Village, Deidara and Sasori, still over a hundred li away, received the news.
Deidara saw it through a telescope. Sasori had more than just Yūra as a spy in the Sand Village; he had other subordinates.
After receiving the news, the two looked at each other, bewildered. What was going on?
Why would the Four-Tails appear inside the Sand Village? And it was reportedly causing massive destruction?
It is often said that the bystander sees clearly. While the Sand Village ninjas were still utterly confused, Sasori had already seen through most of the plot. Although he didn't know the ultimate goal, he was certain that Konoha was behind this!
Only Konoha had so many masters capable of capturing the Four-Tails. As for the motive, it was simple and clear: revenge!
In Sasori's view, revenge was a very normal thing; it was stranger that they hadn't retaliated before.
Seeing Asuma use the Mutual Multiplying Explosive Tags from a distance, Deidara laughed very cheerfully. "Big Brother Sasori, don't you want to go back to your village and take a look? Maybe Konoha ninjas are slaughtering your friends and relatives?"
Sasori replied coldly, like a machine, "I have no friends or relatives."
Though he said that, thinking of Pain's orders, they still flew grandly towards the Sand Village.
They wanted to know what Konoha's objective was. If it was really to capture a Tailed Beast, then perhaps the Akatsuki would have to play the role of a righteous friend for once!
Stone Village spies, Mist Village spies, Cloud Village spies, and Root spies within the Sand Village all sent out messages.
They didn't have Sasori's wisdom and couldn't see through the plot, but the fact that the Four-Tails Jinchuriki had appeared in the Sand Village was undeniable.
The Sand Village was in great chaos.
During the Konoha Crush, many ninja clans held back, their first thought being to let the Hokage take the lead while they retreated to protect their families. The Sand Village was the same; many ninja clans retreated from the battlefield at the first opportunity.
The high-prestige elders said nothing. The older ninjas who were supposed to be the core strength lacked ability. Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro had the ability and the authority, but their prestige was too low, and they couldn't command anyone. The three siblings could only personally enter the fray and fight the Four-Tails to the death.
When Jiraiya and the others arrived at the small oasis, Granny Chiyo was fishing with Ebizō.
Gaara had sent them a request for help, but the two still chose to remain inactive.
They hadn't yet seen the situation clearly and would not enter the fray rashly.
Even if they were to enter, it had to be at the most critical moment. How could they rush out to save the day as soon as trouble started? They were already retired.
They sent their Jounin guards over to help, then continued fishing.
Ebizō asked slowly, "Sister, which side's enemy do you think it is?"
He waited for a long time, but there was no response.
He asked again. The old woman's head was bowed, her eyes slightly closed, as if she were feigning sleep.
Ebizō didn't think much of it, but when he saw a fine, wave-like fluorescence appear in the water, he immediately realized something was wrong.
"Sister, wake up!" He reached out to push Chiyo.
Chiyo's neck turned stiffly. Her right eye was completely turbid, but her left eye shone with a strange light. In her scarlet pupil, a black four-pointed pinwheel was slowly spinning.
Genjutsu? A Sharingan?! Ebizō's reaction was very fast. He formed a hand seal with one hand, and a golden light of sealing formulas appeared on the walls, floor, furniture, and Chiyo's forehead.
