Chapter 7 - Chapter 007: The Student Who Never Returned

Kamui!

"Sen...sei… I'm sorry... No..."

The distorted spiraling vortex of space-time ninjutsu devoured the masked figure inch by inch. Obito's body was being pulled into another dimension, his voice barely audible, distorted as if echoing from the bottom of a deep well. It was faint, stuttering, and drenched with a rare sense of emotion that hadn't touched his voice in a long while.

Only one person understood what he was saying—Namikaze Minato. The Fourth Hokage stood silently, watching the young man who had once been his student disappear. In those garbled words, he heard not a villain or a traitor, but the boy who had once smiled shyly beneath the shadow of his goggles, always late because he'd stop to help an elderly villager or carry groceries for a stranger.

But none of this would have been possible without the power of Shisui's Mangekyō Sharingan—the illusion of Kotoamatsukami. A genjutsu so powerful it could rewrite a person's will without them even knowing it. In this case, it had planted the seed of surrender. Only now, that seed was taking root—too late to change Obito's fate, but just in time to reveal who he had once been.

"Hokage-sama! My chakra is being cut off!" Shisui's voice rang out, sharp and sudden.

Minato's eyes narrowed, instantly shifting from grief to urgency. "Kakashi, now!"

As the final remnants of Obito's Kamui spiral closed shut, Kakashi sprang forward, his own left eye glowing ominously. "Kamui!"

In a blink, another space-time vortex enveloped both Kakashi and Shisui, spiriting them away just as the original Kamui sealed itself. The cave returned to silence, save for the faint hum of chakra dissipating.

Minato and Fugaku exchanged glances. Without a word, the two activated their sensory techniques, probing the air for any lingering chakra signatures or fluctuations in the surrounding space-time. The battle wasn't over—just moved to another realm.

In the Kamui Dimension.

A thin stream of blood trickled from Shisui's left eye. His Mangekyō had been pushed close to its limit. Beside him, Kakashi collapsed, unable to hold himself upright, his chest rising and falling rapidly.

"The chakra link is severed," Shisui muttered, quickly pulling out a soldier pill and offering one to Kakashi. "Eat this. Restore your reserves. I'll deal with him."

As Shisui turned, his eyes locked onto the figure standing across the void—a man masked in orange, single eye narrowed beneath the tiger-patterned visage. In his heart, Shisui was already piecing together the puzzle.

Minato had dissected the enemy's ability with chilling precision. The Kamui's nature, its activation speed, and its limitation—all had been described in detail. But never once had he named their foe. That was deliberate.

Too deliberate.

How could a man know so much about an enemy's Mangekyō Sharingan ability, yet not speak his name?

Unless... he couldn't bring himself to say it.

Kakashi wouldn't understand the truth—but Shisui, as a fellow Uchiha, did. He knew the Mangekyō didn't evolve randomly. It wasn't a gift; it was a curse born of immense grief. It took something deeply personal to awaken it—and to evolve it uniquely in each user.

Kakashi had no Uchiha blood. He shouldn't have been able to awaken a Mangekyō at all. And yet, his eye evolved.

Why? Because it wasn't Kakashi's power to begin with—it was Obito's.

Two matching Mangekyō, each with complementary space-time abilities—offense and defense, entrance and exit.

The masked man standing before them was none other than Uchiha Obito, the student of the Fourth Hokage, comrade of Kakashi, and presumed war hero of the Third Great Ninja War.

The truth stung like a kunai in the gut.

"Huff... huff... huff..."

Obito's breath came in ragged bursts, not from physical exhaustion, nor chakra depletion—after all, he possessed the regenerative power of Hashirama cells. No, this was fear.

Fear of the man standing before him: Shisui of the Body Flicker.

The young Uchiha, close to Obito's age, radiated raw killing intent. And more dangerously, resolve.

Obito's lone Mangekyō glinted warily, but it remained fixed—not on Shisui's eyes, but lower, toward his legs.

"The Mangekyō Sharingan's illusion—powerful enough to manipulate the heart without one realizing," Obito muttered, eyes narrowed. "Even so, chakra severance within this dimension renders it ineffective."

Shisui didn't answer.

"You're strong," Obito continued. "You earned fame during the Third Great Ninja War with your genjutsu and body flicker techniques. But that war showed us the truth, didn't it? This world is steeped in hatred and blood. So tell me, junior... will you betray me too?"

With that, Obito suddenly vanished—appearing next to Kakashi in a flash, hand reaching for the latter's left eye.

But—

*Boom!*

A green aura exploded outward—Susanoo's ribcage erupted around Kakashi, shielding him just in time. The skeletal form stood between Obito and his target, its blood-red eyes spinning furiously with a cross-shaped tomoe.

The skeletal arm lashed out, striking Obito with crushing force.

*Boom!!*

A massive boulder cracked in two from the impact, debris flying.

Obito barely escaped in time, sweat beading on his brow. "Susanoo... even now?!"

Shisui's breathing was labored. Blood streamed freely from his eye. The strain of sustaining Susanoo was immense, and even he couldn't keep it up much longer.

The chakra construct faded, and his eye regressed to its three-tomoe form. Drawing his ninjatō, he stood ready.

It hadn't been part of the plan to use Susanoo—not yet—but the urgency had left him no choice.

He reviewed their current position: in this Kamui dimension, the enemy's signature ability was now nullified. Obito couldn't phase through attacks anymore. The real world was being guarded by Minato and Fugaku. Should Obito escape, the Flying Thunder God would ensure he didn't survive long. Here, the pressure was on him.

Their battlefield had become a noose—and Shisui was pulling it tighter.

Obito pulled out a long, segmented chain, its metallic links clinking ominously.

"You won't protect him forever. Let me show you the gift I received from Hashirama."

"Wood Release: Deep Forest Emergence!"

(T.L Note: Obviously not the Hashirama-version, more like used by Yamato)

The barren stone landscape erupted—massive trees burst forth, twisting and coiling, transforming the space into a green hell. Branches whipped forward, targeting Shisui.

"Fire Style ∙ Great Fireball Technique!"

Shisui exhaled a massive fireball, the flames consuming the encroaching vines. Carrying Kakashi on his back, he flickered across the battlefield, narrowly dodging another series of whip-like branches.

"Still running?" Obito sneered. "Hashirama's power can sprout forests for days. How long can you evade?"

Kakashi stirred. His voice was weak, but calm. "I can't suppress the Mangekyō anymore... It's too hard without Uchiha blood. Let me down. I'll defend. The rest is up to you."

Shisui didn't look back. "Can you manage?"

Kakashi gave a slight nod. "I'll stay out of the fight... but if he gets close, I'll teleport him out. He won't risk it."

After a few more blurring steps, Shisui gently set Kakashi behind a boulder. He reached up, wiping blood from his eye.

Now it was his move.

He launched forward—slicing through vines, dodging chains. Fire-style jutsu lit the forest aflame. Shisui's flickering form danced like a ghost, but Obito's defenses were precise. Every time Shisui neared, the masked man countered with steel and wood.

Then—Kakashi moved.

His hand gripped his forehead protector and yanked it up.

"Kamui!"

Obito flinched, eyes snapping to Kakashi. He abandoned his current position, vanishing in panic.

He knew the risk—if Kakashi pulled him into the real world, he'd be a sitting duck for the Fourth Hokage. Minato would not hesitate.

*Clang!*

Steel met steel as Shisui's blade intercepted Obito's chain. Sparks flew, vines twisted—and in that moment, blood-red eyes flashed again.

The cross mark returned.

"Body Flicker Technique!"
