Chapter 299 - Law and Makima

Trafalgar Law's story is one of tragedy.

He once lived in a fairly happy family. His father was the top doctor in the town of Flevance. Both of his parents were alive, and he had a lovely younger sister. Because of his family, he began studying medicine at a young age, and his life was set to be one of health and happiness.

But everything was destroyed by the Amber Lead Syndrome...

Amber Lead Syndrome wasn't contagious, but the World Government spread false information, claiming it was highly infectious. This led people to fear and loathe those afflicted with the disease.

Eventually, the once paradisiacal town of Flevance became a living hell.

Surrounded by blockades from neighboring countries, almost all the people in Flevance, infected with Amber Lead Syndrome, refused to accept their fate and fought back. Since the town was the source of Amber Lead, they could produce a large number of weapons.

They tried to break through the blockades, hoping to find treatment, but neighboring nations, fearing the disease like the plague, responded with even more violent force.

From that day on, the town was filled with the sounds of gunfire and explosions, and people died every day—either from bullets or the disease itself.

As the son of a doctor, Law witnessed too much death, and his heart grew numb to the suffering around him.

He felt anger and unwillingness to surrender, but he believed his father could find a cure for Amber Lead Syndrome. Every time he saw his sister suffering from the disease, his father was the only light in his life.

But then...

That light was extinguished.

He heard two gunshots, and suddenly his parents were dead bodies on the ground...

Because of the ongoing war, people from neighboring countries hated those infected with Amber Lead Syndrome even more. Armies, equipped with protective gear, entered Flevance to carry out a "cleansing."

Law's parents died during one of these purges, and he was plunged into despair. When he came to his senses, the hospital was already engulfed in flames.

The crackling sound of burning flames dragged Law back to reality. He looked at the burning hospital and felt an excruciating, heart-wrenching pain.

His sister, Lami, was still in the hospital!

Corpses littered the ground outside the hospital, including the bodies of many children. Not long ago, these children had been struggling to survive, hoping to receive treatment at the hospital. Now, they were cold, lifeless bodies.

"Lami!"

Law cried out in agony, calling his sister's name. The death of his parents and the fire at the hospital left him in unbearable pain. His mind was overwhelmed, tears streaming down his face uncontrollably. The sheer weight of his grief brought his thoughts to a halt.

At that moment, a hand gently rested on his shoulder. It was soft, but at that moment, it felt warm and comforting.

"So sad… is your family inside the hospital?"

A voice entered Law's mind, pulling him back from his nightmare. He turned and saw a woman standing before him.

She had mesmerizing eyes with rings that seemed to form a tunnel straight to the soul. Her pink hair fell in soft waves, with two neat bangs framing her face.

She wore a white shirt, black pants, and a black tie. Draped over her shoulders was a black coat, and under the flickering flames, she appeared almost angelic, as if bathed in holy light.

"I…"

Law stared at her, his mind still foggy, but in the next moment, he broke down, pleading, "Please... please save my sister!"

"Is your sister inside the hospital?" the woman asked gently.

"Yes! My sister, Lami. Please, I beg you, save her! I'll do anything, I'll be your servant, I'll be your dog, just save her!"

Though overcome with grief, Law wasn't foolish. Looking at the woman's attire, he could tell she wasn't an ordinary person.

Moreover, several men in black suits stood behind her, all orderly and disciplined, exuding an aura stronger than any army Law had ever seen.

"Heh…"

The pink-haired woman smiled faintly at Law's desperate plea. She gently patted his head and softly said, "Then... the contract is sealed."

Contract?

Law didn't care about any contract; he didn't understand it. All he wanted was for his sister to be saved.

To save his sister, Lami!

Then, the woman moved.

She calmly walked into the burning hospital, as though the flames were nonexistent. Law watched in a daze, seeing not just a person but an angel stepping into the holy light. The fierce flames seemed powerless before her.

The woman's figure disappeared into the hospital.

Law collapsed onto the ground, overwhelmed by everything that had happened in such a short period. The pressure he had felt seemed to release all at once, leaving him completely drained.

Could this woman save his sister?

Law still felt anxious, but seeing the men in black around him gave him some reassurance.

The men showed no signs of worry. They stood, as before, in silence—majestic and powerful.

As he had hoped, from within the fiery blaze, the woman emerged from the collapsing hospital, carrying someone in her arms. The flames behind her seemed to part as she walked, not a single ember daring to touch her. Her clothes remained pristine, her hair as smooth and beautiful as ever.

Law was speechless, staring in awe as the woman walked toward him, cradling none other than…

"Lami!"

Suddenly awake, Law's heart surged with joy. He didn't know where he found the strength, but he rushed forward to meet Makima.

The woman knelt and handed the unconscious Lami to Law.

Though Lami bore some burn marks, they weren't serious. She was in a deep sleep, breathing softly, looking more peaceful than when the disease tormented her.

"Lami…"

Law, overjoyed but careful not to wake his sister, held her gently and turned to the woman who had saved her. "Thank you, thank you so much! My name is Trafalgar Law. From this day forward, my life is yours!"

"By the way, I don't even know your name."

The woman looked at Law's excited and grateful expression, smiled softly, and introduced herself.

"Makima."
