Noah noticed that after a few steps the pain began to subside—it was as if his body were gradually adapting to the changes. When he emerged outside the room, he realized that the damage he had inadvertently caused was far greater than he had imagined. The holes in several of the courtyard's walls made that abundantly clear.
Sophia had already shown Noah the cause of all those holes—the bones that had been expelled from his body in a very strange and sudden manner—but even then he was slow to believe it. After all, without bones, he shouldn't have been able to move his arms or even walk.
It wasn't long before whispers and rumors began circulating throughout the corridors and rooms of the Radiance estate. Many had seen the family lords walking around the house with a stranger—and, even more disconcerting, their young lady helping him walk, serving as support.
"Could he be the young lady's boyfriend…?" became one of the most recurring questions.
What further fueled that suspicion was the fact that Arthur was present at the time many saw the two together—and everyone there knows how protective he is when it comes to anything related to Sophia or Alice. They say he's extremely overprotective. So for something like that to have occurred right beside him, there must surely be more to the relationship between Sophia and the supposed "stranger."
Arthur took a while to learn about these rumors—and he was furious when he did.
The Radiance estate was so enormous—so vast that Noah thought it was like a small town—that he could feel the creaking in his bones cease and the pain vanish completely, all while they were walking and even before they reached the destination. Nevertheless, he said nothing about it and continued to walk alongside Sophia, savoring the warmth that stirred in his chest.
When they passed through a gate guarded by four soldiers—the largest he had seen during that walk—Noah thought they had finally arrived at the place where the oven was located. But they hadn't. Only after crossing the front area paved with stone tiles—which also served as a personal training area—passing by the grassy borders of the mansion, glimpsing the trees beyond it (where a small table hid in the shadows), and finally spotting a walkway a little farther ahead, did he conclude that they were nearing their final destination.
The floating pavilion caught Noah's attention, but not nearly as much as the fish in the lake—which were truly astonishing and beautiful. He followed Sophia up the dark stairs, and that was when he thought it might be best to distance himself slightly from her—since she had done the opposite, moving close from the very first step to ensure she wouldn't let him fall. In that moment, Noah became acutely aware of every detail of her presence, in an exaggerated and unnecessary way.
"This place seems to be far too well guarded for just anyone to have access... Are you sure it's alright for me to be here?"
"There shouldn't be any problem. The place itself isn't anything special—after all, it comes as part of the leader's role in the family," Arthur explained.
Although it was only a short flight of stairs, the darkness made the path seem much longer than it really was. For Noah, that perception was caused by a mix of sensations he experienced along the way—both physical and psychological. He could hear his own heart beating uncontrollably with every step.
The steps ended abruptly, and even though Noah didn't seem to be suffering any severe physical issues, he almost fell. In his mind, he refused to imagine what that soft surface was that he felt when Sophia caught him. But he didn't have to imagine it—the corridor ahead was lit by torches, so he could see everything as soon as he opened his eyes. In fact, he could have done so even if it were dark; knowing that, he had climbed the stairs with his eyes closed, which only led his own imagination to exaggerate the sensations experienced during the previous touches.
Embarrassed, Sophia quickly helped Noah back into an upright position—Arthur was turning around to see what had happened.
They continued the rest of the way in silence, and the door at the end of the passage left Noah awestruck by its imposing presence. The creaks it made as Arthur began to open it seemed to make the very floor tremble.
And there it was, in the center of the room, radiating a feeling of powerlessness and fear. The oven exuded "failure" as if that were an intrinsic part of its nature.
Noah walked up to the object and wondered to himself,
'What is this...? Should an alchemy oven really be like this?'
Feeling the cold touch and the transmitted pain—but realizing that much of it wasn't physical.
[Alchemy is deeply connected with bonds—whether between ingredients or with the cultivator.]
[What emotion could a cultivator, in deep despair and an endless cycle of failures, possibly channel with all his might?]
'...Guilt, pain, and fear...'
[Ovens or cauldrons are also imbued with these emotions and thoughts, provided they are intense enough to leave an imprint.]
[They don't directly interfere with the alchemy itself or its outcomes—but they can end up hampering the alchemist's concentration and, as a result, cause the process to fail.]
[Not that I think something like that will happen to you...]
'...Was that a compliment...?'
"And so, is it good enough?" Arthur asked anxiously.
"Huh? Yes, I think it's fine."
"Fine…?" Sophia murmured, surprised to see that Noah was not only touching that thing but didn't even seem to care about it.
"Well, the emotions of its previous user are still embedded in it, but that doesn't directly affect the results of pill-making, so it doesn't matter." Noah turned, resuming his examination of the oven. "And you still haven't told me what you wanted to discuss. Was the money I gave not enough? Or… does it have something to do with the herbs?"
