He sat up with effort, scanning the room.
Akiko was gone.
No sign of her. Not even a note. The only thing out of place was the empty beer can still resting near the side table.
"Where's my phone…" He looked around.
He leaned over the edge of the bed, searching the floor. His fingers brushed against the cold metal of his phone. "It's here. Thank goodness."
He swiped it open.
No calls. No messages. Nothing new in the logs—no missed calls, no strange numbers, no sudden messages in the middle of the night. Nothing.
"Phew… I guess I didn't make any drunken calls or messages. That's also a good thing. But did Akiko leave the hotel alone in the middle of the night?"
He hesitated, then tapped Akiko's contact and pressed call.
Only one ring and then straight to voicemail.
Wil exhaled sharply through his nose and let the phone drop to his lap. "Should I go to her house?" he muttered to himself. "No… no, maybe she's at college, wait, it's Sunday. She should be at home, right?"
