He gave a small, rueful smile. "When your father has bodyguards stationed outside your bedroom door, classmates stop inviting you to birthday parties, you don't have friends. You could only have lackeys." He lifted a shoulder.
The soft piano looped into another gentle refrain. Akiko's teasing expression softened; she leaned in, elbows on the table. "No one at all, then?"
Wil swirled the water in his glass, watching reflections dance. "Acquaintances, sure. Investors, partners, people who want something from me." He chuckled under his breath.
